Dr. Kathleen Mellor

Dr. Kathleen Mellor was born in Providence, Rhode Island and attended public schools in Smithfield and Cranston. In 1970, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Rhode Island College. She earned a Master of Education Degree in 1977 from Rhode Island College and a Master of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in ESL and Cross Cultural Studies from Brown University in 1989.

Having been an ESL teacher since 1980, she has taught at all levels, k-16 and adults. She taught at International Institute of Rhode Island, and as a continuing education adjunct at Rhode Island College. Since 1985, she has been an ESL teacher in the North Kingstown School Department. Dr. Mellor is credited with the design of the North Kingstown collaborative ESL program for which she received the 2004 Award for Excellence in ELL Education from the US Department of Education.

In 2004, she was named the 2004 National Teacher of the Year and then went on to earn a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Johnson and Wales University in 2009.
