Dr. Suja Lowenthal, DPD

Councilmember, City of Long Beach

Dr. Suja Lowenthal is an urban planner elected to represent the Second District in a special election held in 2006. She was re-elected in 2008 and 2012. She served as Vice Mayor from 2010 – 2012. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from UCLA, a Master's in Business Administration from California State University, Los Angeles and a Doctorate in Policy, Planning and Development from USC.

Suja’s professional background includes over 14 years of policy experience in the water industry and had the distinct honor of presenting at the United Nations and World Bank on best practices of local governments to implement litter management strategies and associated costs of plastic pollution. In
addition, she was asked to speak at the Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conference about her urban planning work globally to shape cities for the future as well as her work here in Long Beach.

During her six years on City Council, Suja has provided the political will and leadership to advance the City’s award-winning bicycle & pedestrian friendly initiatives, downtown visioning, historic preservation, animal care services and green policies involving plastic bags, recycling, storm water runoff and
alternative forms of energy.
