Founder, Student Alliance for Prison Reform
Eva Shang is an 18-year-old sophomore at Harvard University and the founder of the Student Alliance for Prison Reform, a nationwide network of students working in prison education and reform. Originally from Philadelphia, she is passionate about prison reform, and through the Student Alliance for Prison Reform, has organized nationwide student campaigns against solitary confinement.
Recognized by Dell as one of the inaugural "12 under 22" of 2014, Eva is the co-founder and co-president of Harvard's first prison reform organization HOPE. She directs a tutoring program at a medium security women's prison, MCI Framingham, and is passionate about expanding economic opportunity and instituting education and criminal justice reform in her home city of Philadelphia. Eva has been recognized by Philadelphia City Council as a “Rising Star,” part of the City of Philadelphia’s Next Generation of Women’s Leadership.
With her 11-year-old sister Melissa, who has muscular dystrophy, Eva launched a viral petition for a disabled American Girl doll that was featured in Cosmopolitan, USA Today, CBS, HLN, IB Times, and other major news outlets. She currently serves on several advisory boards, including State Farm, Dell, and Opportunity Nation, and has spoken at TEDx events and conferences around the country. Eva serves as Harvard Editor-at-Large at the Huffington Post.
