Gerard Koeppel is a writer and historian. He is the author of City on a Grid: How New York Became New York (Da Capo, November 2015), which won a 2015 New York City Book Award; Bond of Union: Building the Erie Canal and the American Empire (Da Capo, 2009); and Water for Gotham: A History (Princeton University Press, 2000). He has contributed to numerous other books, including The Encyclopedia of New York City (Yale University Press, 2009), of which he was an associate editor. His writing also appears in magazines, journals, museum exhibits, newspapers, and on historical signage in New York City parks.
