Author, 'Darwin’s Devices: What Evolving Robots Teach Us About the History of Life and the Future of Technology'

John Long is the author of Darwin’s Devices: What Evolving Robots Teach Us About the History of Life and the Future of Technology (Basic Books, 2012). He is also a full Professor at Vassar College, with joint appointments in Cognitive Science and Biology. He is Chair of the Department of Biology and serves as Director of Vassar’s Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory, which he co-founded. His research on animal biomechanics, biomimetics, and biorobotics is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. He works with biomedical and robotics engineers at CoroWare, Farco Technologies, IntelliTech Microsystems, MiMedx Group, Nekton Research, and Physcient.
