John Thornton2

John Thornton is a professor of History and director of the African American Studies Program at Boston University. Educated at the University of Michigan and UCLA, Thornton has been a specialist in the history of Africa and the African diaspora for nearly 40 years. He is the author of seven books on Africa including Africa and Africans in the Making of the Atlantic World, and along with Linda Heywood, Central Africans, Atlantic Creoles and the Foundation of the Americas, which won the Herskovits prize for the best book on Africa in 2008. His most recent book, A Cultural History of the Atlantic World, won the World History Association Prize in 2012.
