Laureate Professor of Mathematics, University of Newcastle, Australia

Jonathan M. Borwein, FRSC FAAS, FAA, is a world expert on pi but his day job is in optimization. He was dubbed "Dr. Pi" after he and his brother Peter developed algorithms (computer formulas) that enabled extremely large and fast calculations of pi. These algorithms today allow new world records to be set in calculating the value of pi using super-fast computers.

Jon is currently Laureate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Newcastle, Australia and director of the Centre for Computer Assisted Research Mathematics and its Applications (CARMA). He is a regular contributor to the Conversation.
