Joseph WInters

Professor, Writer, Teacher, Freestyle artist

My name is Joseph Winters and I am from Rochester, NY. I received my BA in Economics from Harvard University in 1999 and my PhD in Religion, Ethics, and Politics from Princeton University in 2009. I was a professor in Religious Studies at UNC Charlotte for six years . I am currently an assistant professor in Religious Studies and African and African American studies at Duke University.

My academic interests lie at the intersection of African American religious thought, philosophy, and literature. My first book Hope Draped in Black: Race, Melancholy, and the Agony of Progress (Duke University Press) will be available in June 2016. I am currently working on a second book on hip hop and religion.

I enjoy reading, writing, film, music, conversations with family and friends, and good (and bad) food.
