Karen Middleton

Executive Director, NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado

Karen Middleton is the Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado. NARAL is a leading organization in the reproductive rights movement advocating for full access to reproductive health care – without fear or stigma.

NARAL serves to support and protect, as a fundamental right and value, a woman's freedom to make personal decisions regarding reproductive health care. We do so by developing and sustaining a statewide constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding reproductive health care.

Previously, Karen served as the president of Emerge America, a national organization that trains Democratic women to run for elected office. While at the helm, Emerge expanded into five additional states.

Karen served in the Colorado State Legislature from February 2008 through 2010, where she was in a leadership position as Majority Caucus Chair. From November 2004-February 2008, she served on Colorado's elected State Board of Education representing the 7th Congressional District.

In addition to six years as an elected official, Karen's work includes teaching political science, serving as a trainer for the White House Project and similar organizations, and creating the bipartisan Colorado Legislative Women's Caucus. She worked for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), eCollege, and as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver.

Karen holds a BA from Mount Holyoke College in Women's Studies and Politics, an MA in Political Science from the University of Colorado at Denver, and an MA in Higher Education Governance from the University of Denver.
