Leon Cato

Documentary and portrait photographer

Born in London and raised in New York, Leon Cato is a portrait and documentary photographer with a style that lies evenly between traditional and contemporary photography. Leon nods to an approach that is structured but has a preference of portraying subjects in an expression that honors their own truth. His core belief is that his imagery should reflect the personality of those whose portraiture he documents rather than simply 'capturing a moment'.

Leon cultivates a photographic technique that strives to harness an 'in between' instant. This results in a voyeuristic type conclusion where viewers feel as though they have been given an intimate insight into the lives and landscapes of others. He takes time to pay close attention to the position of each subject in the frame and enjoys pushing visual boundaries and rules regarding composition and focus. His artistic thought process stems from a fundamental theory that each image deserves its own individual representation.

Leon has had work highlighted in a variety of publications including The Independent and Creative Boom.
