Immigrant youth leader, Latino Voices contributor
Originally from Naranjo, Alajuela, Costa Rica, Mayra Hidalgo Salazar immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 6-months-old. She is undocumented and has dedicated her life to the immigrant justice movement in Florida. She is based out of Lakeland, Florida where she has served her community through various immigrant rights organizations such as Students Working for Equal Rights (SWER), the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC), and Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON). She currently serves as Board Treasurer on the United We DREAM Network (UWD) Board of Directors. She was a project manager for the Trail of Dreams campaign in 2010, a 1,500 mile walk from Miami, FL to Washington, D.C. demanding that President Obama stop the deportation of undocumented students and separation of immigrant families.
A student at Sarah Lawrence College studying Public Policy, Mayra’s spirit to forge ahead for the justice and dignity of immigrants remains undeterred. She aspires to earn a law degree and continue to fight alongside the community that taught her to persevere against all odds.
