Ten months shy of being a Denver native, Michael has dedicated his life to working for a better and stronger Denver. Growing up in some of the city's roughest neighborhoods in a big family without much money, Michael knows the value of hard work and the necessity of working together. He understands what makes Denver’s communities thrive – and has the resolve to turn our challenges into opportunities. Michael is a product of Denver Public Schools. After graduating from Manual High, he interned for former Denver Mayor Federico Peña. Michael has been a leader in the Denver community beginning at a young age, bringing fresh vision and innovative solutions to every aspect of his work. At the age of 29, Michael became the youngest CEO of an Urban League affiliate, creating nationally recognized job programs, forging new partnerships with some of Denver’s largest employers and collaborating with leaders like then- Mayor Wellington Webb.
For the last eight years, Michael has served his community as a leader on the Denver City Council, including two terms as the council President, teaming up with Mayor John Hickenlooper to cut spending and eliminate more than $350 million in budget shortfalls. Michael has driven prosperity and trust in northeast Denver through openness and determination, and his dedication to move our entire city forward together is generating new enthusiasm in Denver’s communities.
