Michael Meranze

Michael was born in 1956. He got his B.A. from Wesleyan University (Conn)
and his Ph.D from University of California, Berkeley (1987). He has
taught at the College of William and Mary, University of California,
San Diego, and is now at the University of California, Los Angles
where he is a Professor of History. His teaching and research emphasizes
colonial, Revolutionary and Early Republican United States although he also writes on the history of punishment and is now co-editing a volume
on the American Death Penalty in historical and comparative
perspective. He is the author of Laboratories of Virtue: Punishment,
Revolution, and Authority in Philadelphia, 1760-1835 (University of
North Carolina Press, 1996).
