Pamela Newkirk is professor of journalism and a director of undergraduate studies at New York University. She is the author of Within the Veil: Black

Journalists, White Media which won the National Press Club Award for Media Criticism and the editor of Letters from Black America, a collection of more than two hundred letters written by a cross-section of African Americans over the past three centuries She is the recent recipient of the Leon Levy Fellowship at the Biography Center at CUNY to work on a biography on Ota Benga, a Congolese man exhibited in the Bronx Zoo Monkey House in 1906.
