She was featured in a documentary on deafness known as Sound and Fury that was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000.
Dr. Chute’s research has focused on children and adults with severe to profound hearing loss as well as the educational needs of deaf children. She is known both nationally and internationally for her work in this area and organizes workshops around the globe to train speech, hearing and educational professionals. Her work throughout Europe, Asia and the Mideast has provided her with a keen insight into the workforce needs in the health professions especially speech and hearing professionals.
She was a health policy fellow with the Ohio University/NYIT program and has worked with lobby groups and other governmental agencies highlighting issues for individuals with speech and hearing disorders. In her role as the Vice President of Audiology for the New York Speech and Hearing Association she worked closely with legislators. As dean at NYIT, she oversees programs in Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Mental Health Counseling, Nutrition and Health Sciences. Since the majority of these programs are accredited by national agencies, Dr. Chute has worked closely with faculty, chairs and consultants to ensure compliance and successful re-accreditation. She also held the position of interim dean for the School of Education during the 2014-2015 academic year. She has supported faculty research and development. Cognizant of enrollment trends and limitations on the university system, she has worked to develop programs that address the needs in the different professions, both immediate and long term in the school. Most recently, she has been actively involved in a national task force through the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professionals. This task force is collecting data to address the current issues regarding clinical education and how it affects workforce issues in each of the health profession fields.
Dr. Chute has been a trail blazer in her field and has carried that passion during her time in higher education. Most recently she worked closely with faculty to submit a grant to the Elsevier Foundation to support an international conference addressing the needs of Women in STEM. She was also the moving force behind grants that supported research in gerontology and primary care. Most importantly, she has actively mentored female faculty for leadership roles by providing funding opportunities to attend workshops as well as presentations.
