Patrick Hope

Member, Virginia General Assembly

Patrick Hope is a member of the Virginia General Assembly and represents the 47th District in the House of Delegates. In Richmond, Patrick founded and now co-chairs the Virginia Progressive Caucus, aimed at fighting back against the radical Republicans that want to adopt the failed social and economic policies of the past. Patrick says his focus is on creating jobs, strengthening Virginia’s education system, investing in infrastructure and increasing access to quality health care.

As a health care attorney with over a decade of experience in Virginia, one of Patrick’s main goals while in Richmond has been to promote full implementation the Affordable Care Act. In addition to being able to build seniority beginning on day one, Patrick will have the credibility and experience to defend the important reforms in the Affordable Care Act.

Since being elected, Patrick has been appointed to serve on the Virginia Health Reform Initiative, and is the only House Democrat on the committee. He was also appointed to serve on the Task Force of School and Campus Safety, which reviews and establishes policies and procedures to ensure the safety of our children in school.

Before being elected to the House of Delegates, Patrick served as chair of the Arlington Community Services Board, which serves those in our community with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as those in need of mental health services. Patrick remembers the needs he saw while serving on that board, and has fought to call attention to the issues faced by the most vulnerable among us.

In addition to the Community Services Board, Patrick founded the reorganized Buckingham Community Civic Association, co-chaired the Arlington Implementation Task Force to End Homelessness, and served on the Arlington County Commission on Aging.

Throughout his time in office, Patrick has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being named a Legislator of the Year by both the VA Transit Association and the VA Academy of Family Physicians. Other awards include the Virginia Elder Rights Coalition’s Annual Elder Rights Award and the Rookie of the Year award from the Virginia Education Association. Patrick has been named a Legislative Hero by the League of Conservation Voters and earned a 100% rating from the group for his work fighting to protect the environment.

Patrick received his undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and his masters degree in congressional studies from The Catholic University in Washington, DC. In 2001, Patrick then received his law degree from The Catholic University. After his schooling, Patrick spent several years on Capitol Hill working for Senator Bob Kerry (D-NE) and Congressman Henry Gonzalez (D-TX). He currently serves as the Director of Legislative Policy at the American College of Cardiology and as an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.
