LA-based social entrepreneur
Rick Nahmias is an LA-based social entrepreneur who’s devoted the last decade to creating consciousness-raising art and food-centric projects and organizations. As a photographer, writer and visual storyteller his social-justice themed media projects have been shown across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Via photography, he is known for documenting the lives and struggles of numerous marginalized communities. "Golden States of Grace: Prayers of the Disinherited," his traveling multimedia exhibit which documents eleven marginalized communities at prayer was published by University of New Mexico Press. His acclaimed body of work exploring California's agricultural workforce "The Migrant Project: Contemporary California Farm Workers" was also published by UNM Press. The companion exhibitions of his books have toured to over four dozen museums, universities and cultural centers across the country.
After digging deeper into the world of food justice, he founded the award-winning anti-hunger non-profit, Food Forward in 2009, which this summer, celebrates harvesting its millionth pound for of backyard fruit for the hungry of Southern California.
His images and writing have been profiled and published in national newspapers, journals, blogs and news weeklies such as Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post. His work has been presented on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, is part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian, and several other private and public collections across the country.
His work has been funded by The Durfee, Annenberg and S. Mark Taper Foundations and The Pew Charitable Trusts, among others. A graduate of NYU, he was a speaker at the 2011 TEDx Conference in Los Angeles where shared his innovative combination of visual storytelling and activism, and was named a 2012 US delegate to the Slow Food/Terra Madre Conference in Torino, Italy.
