Ruby Bernstein, Stanford University, BA ‘53 Journalism, San Francisco State University, MA ‘72, Secondary Education, retired from English teaching in April 2008. She taught for more than 40 years in two high schools in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District and more recently as an adjunct at Laney College in inner city Oakland. A veteran traveler, in 1965-66 she received a teaching Fulbright to Karachi, Pakistan, and Tehran, Iran. In the summers of 1992, 1994, and 1997, after the Soviets left the Baltic countries, she volunteered with American Professional Partnership for Lithuanian Education, to teach language arts curriculum to Lithuanian teachers. In 1974, Ms. Bernstein became a founding Fellow of the Bay Area Writing Project, UC Berkeley, organizing and giving hundreds of workshops to K-12 teachers to improve the teaching of writing in California and throughout the U.S. She resides in Oakland, CA.
