Ruth Behar

Ruth Behar was born in Havana, Cuba and is a professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan. A recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Award, she is known for her writing about the search for home in our global era. Her books include The Presence of the Past in a Spanish Village, Translated Woman, and The Vulnerable Observer. She has been a frequent traveler to Cuba for over twenty years, seeking shared bonds of culture and memory, and is the editor of the pioneering anthology, Bridges to Cuba, and the author of An Island Called Home and Traveling Heavy, which chronicle her return journeys to the island.
