Ruth Milkman, Professor of Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center and Academic Director of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education at SPS, served as Director of the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment from 2001 to 2008. She received her B.A. from Brown University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. After 21 years as a Professor at UCLA, she moved to CUNY at the end of 2009. She has written extensively about work and labor organization in the United States, including L.A. Story: Immigrant Workers And The Future Of The U.S. Labor Movement and a co-authored study of the prevalence of wage theft and other violations of employment law in U.S. urban labor markets.
