My ordination vows include these words: "to free the enslaved, to relieve the oppressed, to comfort the afflicted, and to walk humbly with God." I take these vows seriously. Ella Baker said these words the year I was born (1964): "Until the killing of black men, black mothers' sons, becomes as important to the rest of the country as the killing of a white mother's son, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until this happens." I was born on the South Side of Chicago, raised in Rockford, Illinois, and went to Hope College and Princeton Seminary. I have pastored in the NJ/NYC, Chicago, and Grand Rapids, MI areas.
