Tamara A. Smith, CEO of the YWCA National Capital Area, is a goals driven results-oriented executive with a proven track record in the service industry. She is a highly motivated leader with a 28 year history of setting goals and achieving business objectives in the health care services and non- profit sectors. Since joining the YWCA National Capital Area in 2008, Tamara has lead a dynamic financial, operational and governance turnaround. The YWCA has a staff of 50 and a $4 million annual budget with an asset base of over $20 million. Their mission is the elimination of racism and the empowerment of women. The YWCA’s programs focus on adult education and workforce training; community based health and wellness, racial and social justice and early childhood development. On a voluntary basis, Tamara serves or has served in a leadership capacity, advisory role and/or as a board member and trustee of numerous nonprofit organizations. These include: the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington, Lake Forest College, DC Primary Care Association, Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund, Medicaid Health Plans of America, DC HMO Association, Americas Health Insurance Plans, National Association of Health Service Executives, Healthy Families DC Advisory Board, Excel Institute, Whitman Walker Clinic, Providence Hospital Health Foundation and Brookland Union Baptist Church. Ms. Smith has a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Biology from Lake Forest College, a Master’s Degree in Health Systems Management from Rush University and is a Certified Managed Care Executive. She is a graduate of the Leadership Greater Washington Class of 2012. She has lived and worked in the Metropolitan Washington area since 1983. Tamara is passionate about improving the health and well-being of women and children and providing opportunities for women to improve their long term economic sustainability. She loves the outdoors, is an avid gardener, tennis player and golf enthusiast.
