Professor of religion, psychiatry, anthropology; training psychoanalyst; past Chair of Religious Studies, Vanderbilt University.

Volney Gay is Professor of Religious Studies, Professor of Psychiatry, and Professor of Anthropology at Vanderbilt University (Nashville TN). He is also Training Analyst at the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute. His books include studies of occult religion; Sigmund Freud; Carl Jung; literature and psychology; religion and science; psychotherapy and values; American slavery and the psychology of ownership, among others. He has directed 30 doctoral dissertations.
