I've traveled to/from New York City's three major airports a countless number of times since my first flight to New York when I started Barnard College this time of year 21 years ago. But flying from LaGuardia Airport today on September 11 to the Toronto International Film Festival has been a surreal experience.

The American flag was at half mast when the cab drove out of Manhattan. A sign greeted me when I walked past the sliding doors and into LaGuardia, alternating "Remember our 9-11 Victims" and "God Bless Our Troops. After the TSA screening, I saw my brother-in-law's name on the framed Flag of Honor to commemorate those who died that day.

The airport seems a little quieter, a little more somber, less hustle and bustle than what I remembered those college years commuting between San Diego and my new City I called home.

I will always love New York and will #NeverForget the thousands of lives that were lost 14 years ago today.
