Fat Burning: Which Workout Is Best?

Posted: 12/20/2011 8:07 am

With so many workout choices, from Zumba to TRX to P90X to BodyPump to Spinning to Yogalate to Crossfit to Beach Body Insanity, how can you know which one will burn fat fastest?

The majority of workouts that advertise themselves as high fat-burning can be broken down into three different categories: cardio, resistance and cardio plus resistance. Here's a breakdown of all three:

Cardio: An example of a cardio class would be spinning, in which you ride a stationary bike with varying levels of resistance and pedaling speeds, typically to a choreographed series of songs and incorporating movements such as standing, hovering, and jumping. Dance workouts like Zumba or hip-hop would also fall into the cardio category.

Resistance: A resistance workout would include activities like power yoga, which consists of body weight resistance exercises combined with stretching; Pilates, which is primarily focused on abdominal and lower back resistance training; TRX, which involves pulling and pushing the body with a special type of band; and Bodypump, which uses dumbbells, barbells, and step benches for resistance.

Cardio Plus Resistance: As you may have guessed, cardio plus resistance combines the features above. P90X and Beach Body Insanity are two popular examples of activities that have you lifting weights one moment, then performing jumping jacks or step-ups the next. Another term for this type of exercising is "concurrent training."

So of these three types of workouts, which burns the most fat?

A 2008 study at the University of California which was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research investigated this question by having one group do cardio, another group do resistance, and a final group do cardio plus resistance (in which they ran for 30-60 seconds after completing each weight lifting set).

Even though each group did the same amount of work, the cardio plus resistance group experienced an enormously significant fat loss compared to the other two groups!

The cardio plus resistance group not only burned fat and built muscle at the same time, but the amount of fat they burned was a tenfold increase over the amount burned by the groups that did cardio or resistance training only.

So when it comes to which workout burns the most fat, research suggests that combining cardio and resistance training may be the ultimate solution. Want to try it out without stepping foot in a gym? Here's a sample workout:

1. 10 push-ups or knee push-ups
2. 15-20 jumping jacks
3. 10 squats or lunges
4. 15-20 more jumping jacks
5. 10 crunches followed immediately by 15-20 jumping jacks
6. 10 sets of deadlifts to press
7. 15-20 jumping jacks

If you get tired of jumping jacks for the cardio component, try squat-thrust-jumps, vertical jumps, lunge jumps or horizontal jumps.

Check out my demonstration of these techniques.

A word of caution: If your goal is not to burn fat, but rather to build strength, you'd be better off doing your resistance training as a separate workout. Similarly, if you're training for endurance, then you should focus on a high-quality cardio workout that isn't interrupted by strength training.

I've started doing the sample workout and jogging every other day. Next step: possibly adding yoga to the mix.

I incorporate and recommend a combination of cardio and resistance for myself and my clients...along, of course, with a whole foods nutritional plan. In my experience, this combination brings by far the best fat burning results!

It isn't the TYPE of exercise that burns more fat, just like one machine or gizmo is no better than another. it's the amount of effort you put in. But in general, resistance exercise is better because it builds muscle and muscle is metabolically active. The fat burning remains after you stop training. With pure calorie burning like running, it stops as soon as you stop doing it.

As a sport nut growing up, doing just about everything in the book, and then after high school, dancing ballet on scholarship for 4 years, fat was never an issue. I am 47 now and still, fat is not an issue. Movement and sport is though, it always was and still is an issue, and it is not something that I like to push on others. I do like to make it known how much enjoyment I get out of what I do, but it is not about getting somebody else to do exactly that, what I am doing. After leaving San Francicso for Zürich, Switzerland 22 years ago, I was immediately offered jobs teaching aerobics, stretching and eventually Hip Hop too. As a father of 6 children, I would take them with me too sometimes, while they played in the Kid`s Corner, I would teach and work out like crazy for myself. Discovered weight training (not a bodybuilder) and gained 10 pounds. As I spent thousands of hours in the fitness centers over the years, I never thought that I could break away from it. Now I have my own fitness room at home. I have amazing ideas and train daily, but only quickies, no more 2 or 3 hours. My Power Plate is amazing and allows me to do some really wild things. I use it daily, even doing handstand on it. Where is my cheese and chocolate?

I think these are foolish recommendations. Consult any Yoga teacher, Pilates, Gyrotonic, Physical Therapist, or anyone else that knows there anatomy well, and you would eliminate things like jumping jacks, sautés and lunges if alignment is not correct, the same with crunches. I think needs to learn more about their subject matter before writing articles. Sorry...

I changed my diet (which is 85% of why your body looks the way it does) and started with P90x, and just finished Insanity.....I've lost 60 pounds and completely changed my body. I use an eating rule that 20% of what goes into my body each week can be "bad" food. You can't change your body on a poor diet, no matter how much you work out.

There is absolutely no difference between kettlebells and dumbells, other than kettlebells will bang into your wrists when raising them.

The best way to burn fat is to do the things that will boost your metabolism. Resistance training! Full body circuits will combine the benefits of resistance training and the benefits of cardiovascular exercise. Check out some of my free workout videos as an example.

The workout you like best is the best workout, meaning the one you are more likely to do for a longer period of time.

I can't believe you wrote an entire article centered around a study conducted in 2008 - 3 years ago!

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

HIIT works better than anything I ever used in my workouts, but maybe because it's easy to stay focused on the active intervals knowing the passive intervals are coming up. I do know that growth hormone secretion goes up when lactic acid accumulation meets a certain threshold, and shorter rest intervals during resistance training best facilitate that secretion in vivo. GH is quite important for staying lean.

I agree with your statement about HIIT making it easier to stay focused. It also helps you to easily change up your routine to keep it interesting and challenging. I do two days of heavy resistance, 4 - 5 sets of each exercise, a week. In the days between those I'll do 3 days of concurrent or cross training, mixing cardio with resistance. It's in the cross training days that I do variations of my core exercises.

"P90X and Beach Body Insanity are two popular examples of activities that have you lifting weights one moment, then performing jumping jacks or step-ups the next."

Insanity doesn't require any weights or any equipment. Insanity resistance workouts use only bodyweight (lunges, squats, push-ups, etc.....the worst (by which I mean they burn like he!!) are the V push-ups!).
