8 Steps to a Healthy Home: The Key for a Healthy Body and Planet

Posted: 01/11/2012 7:10 am

Your health starts in your home. If you want to get healthy and stay healthy in 2012, begin by taking eight small steps to make your home toxin-free. It's really pretty simple. Start by first becoming aware of what goes in you, on you, and surrounds you. Why? Because on an average day you are exposed to hundreds of untested chemicals... from the additives in your food and personal care products to things you come in contact with like your mattress or household cleaning products or even your pots and pans.

Scientists are releasing frightening studies about discovering chemical toxins in our drinking water, plastic toys and lipstick. Many of the chemicals in our food (like artificial colors), and cosmetics (like phthalates) have been banned in many countries around the world, but are available here in the U.S. without warning labels. (The Breast Cancer Fund says studies show there's a direct connection from our exposures to toxic chemicals and our breast cancer risk.) Lacking regulation by our government, it falls on us as consumers to watch out for ourselves and our families.

If you feel confused about the simple, practical things you can do to minimize your exposure and maximize your health, don't worry. Here are eight easy steps to decrease the amount of chemical toxins you are exposed to daily.

Eat organic or pesticide-free foods whenever possible. Shop at farmer's markets or plant your own garden.

Start slowly. For example, pick one food or beverage (one you eat most often like milk or peanut butter) to buy organic, pick one personal care product (like deodorant or toothpaste) or makeup item (like lipstick or face cream) to buy without synthetic chemicals and pick one household cleaner (like surface spray or laundry detergent) without fragrance. Notice the changes that occur in a month's time. You may notice your headaches or chronic cough goes away when you stop using artificial fragrances, for instance.

Next month, pick another food, personal care product and household item in our home. Keep raising your awareness of what goes in and on you, and what surrounds you. That will mean reading labels carefully. And that can be tricky, because manufacturers routinely do something known as greenwashing: using misleading, vague or even false claims about the eco/health benefits of their products. For the lowdown on how to tell if a product is (or isn't) really "natural," read my HuffPost piece on the subject.

In a few months time you will be well on your way to creating a Super Natural Home. Not only will you be healthier and have more vitality, you'll be greening your home in the process which in turn will also help create a healthier planet!

Great piece! While it can feel overwhelming at first to think about detoxing everything at home, it actually feels really empowering to know that there's no need to buy toxic products from companies that are harming the planet. In addition to looking at labels, I think it's important to ask, what does this company stand for in the world? And then spend our money supporting companies that support our values.

Eliminating home and health & beauty products containing toxins is well worth the effort. Although we are doused in settings other than our homes as well, the home is where young children and pets get massive exposure to toxins. Kids are usually willing participants in transitioning over to homemade, non-toxic options. Thanks for bringing the issue to the forefront again.

Good article. Good health comes from mindfulness of all we eat, drink and use in our lives. My favorite easy cleaner is 1/3 part vinegar 2 drops liquid dish soap and 2/3 part water in a spray bottle. I use it on most surfaces, no chemicals and cleans great.

thanks for the article, helpful for those newly aware of toxins in our environment. The only thing I disagree with is the implication that more government regulations would solve the problem. Many toxins are regulated and the amounts found in products or used in the environment are within "legal limits". In an ideal world laws change as research becomes undeniable. That isn't always the case so it's up to consumers to be educated, read labels, and choose wisely.

Legislation is needed because these companies can put what ever they want in our products and even the EPA is not aloud that info. They need to know what chemicals are used. Just recently Johnson's baby shampoo revealed they have formalhyde (spell) in their shampoo but for the US. In other countries where there is regulation Johnson's make a safer version for them. Any one can set up shop and put what ever in it.their product. We cannot trust the companies because fragrance on the label can be hundreds of untested chemicals that even our senators admit many cause Cancer. I suffer from everyday products and was always fine til I became ill in a home with water damage. Then I started educating myself. Many sick from water damage get very sensitive to everything and it is very hard to live like this when fragrance is everywhere. Our lives have been altured forever while companies make profit.

One thing to consider concerning water is whether or not your tap water is fluoridated. Fluoride has a great image in our country, but in reality it is a harmful toxin and many countries have labelled it as such and banned it from being used as an additive in drinking water. Fluoride may be good for the teeth, but only through contact. There is a reason that toothpaste is not to be swallowed, and that is due to the inclusion of fluoride in the product.
