Applauding: A New Norm

After welcome greetings and scattered hugs, we start each session by sharing success stories about how we did with our personal health goals that week. Arabs, Muslims, Christians and Jews in our group now receive a weekly healthy dose of applause. One woman confessed that although she still ate out a lot, she replaced carbohydrate sides with vegetable sides. Cue applause. Another announced that she ran her first 5K in a Halloween-themed race away from zombies. Applause for her! Others got gym memberships and some decreased coffee intake, and all received applause of empowerment from a genuinely diverse support system.

Participant's Testimonial

"Slim Peace bridges divides by gathering small groups of women around a topic of universal interest: nutrition and health. The guided conversation invariably results in story-sharing and raising of cross-cultural/cross-religious awareness. The invitation to self-reflection within the small group setting offers moments of insight and instills a more thoughtful awareness of the role of food -- both as fuel for our bodies and an enjoyable pretext to foster dialogue. I hope Slim Peace gains weight in public conversation!"
