Architectones
Richard Neutra VDL Research House (Silverlake)

Opening day for an installation by French artist Xavier Veilhan. Architectones features abstract and figurative sculptures placed throughout the property of the Richard Neutra VDL Research House. The pieces focus on the personal and professional history of Neutra and the ongoing life of his studio and residence. On Friday, August 10 at 7 p.m., a panel discussion will be held with speakers Xavier Veilhan, Neutra scholar Barbara Lamprecht, art critic Jan Tumlir, and Dr. Raymond Neutra, son of the architect; the discussion will be moderated by exhibition curator Francois Perrin. Suggested donation is $10. On view through September 15, 2012.

New Original Works Festival 2012
REDCAT (Downtown)

The final week of this three-week festival featuring nine new original works by Los Angeles dance, theater, music and multimedia performing artists. Week three features Emily Mast, Melanie Rios Glaser, and Heather Woodbury. Tickets cost $18 and are available online.

Songs on Conceptual Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Songs on Conceptual Art, a one-day concert and accompanying album by a collection of musicians and artists inspired by John Baldessari's video of the artist singing Sol LeWitt's text Sentences on Conceptual Art. The lineup for this free event includes the LA Ladies Choir, Brendan Fowler, and ongoing DJ sets by Art Husband & Crazy Band.

Chris Burden: Small Skyscraper
One Colorado Courtyard (Pasadena)
Opening day of a temporary, large-scale, outdoor sculpture by artist Chris Burden. Small Skyscraper represents a quasi-legal structure that exploits a loophole (since closed) in the Los Angeles County building codes that allowed small out buildings to be built without a permit if they stayed within 400 square feet and under 35 feet high. Small Skyscraper is supported by One Colorado. On view through November 11, 2012.

Chamberlain, Gursky, Hirst, Kusama, Prince
Gagosian Gallery (Beverly Hills)

This group show features works by artists John Chamberlain, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, and Richard Prince. On view through September 6, 2012.
