Design East of La Brea (de LaB), hosts a first-ever field trip to Palm Springs in celebration of Modernism Week. On Friday, attend PS Modernists: Insider Stories, a panel co-hosted by the Michael H. Lord Gallery and Palm Springs Life Magazine, and featuring Jean Farrar, Leland Y. Lee, Mathew Sumich, and Nel Ivanich in a discussion on long-time residents who lived and worked with key figures during the birth of modernism in Palm Springs. Ed Ruscha: Psycho Spaghetti Westerns

The opening day for an exhibition of works by Ed Ruscha. Psycho Spaghetti Westerns features wide horizontal paintings, in which landscape becomes a surreal mental construct. The works in this series are an extension of the ideas that led to Ruscha's Course of Empire, a series inspired by five paintings by Thomas Cole of the Hudson River School, which depict the same landscape over time as it declines from a pristine natural state into desolation.
Black Swan: The Exhibition

The opening reception for an exhibition curated by Dominic Sidhu, featuring a series of contemporary artworks that appear within the sets of the film Black Swan. Artists include: Matthew Barney, Walead Beshty, Gardar Eide Einarsson, Katharina Fritsch, Douglas Gordon, Dan Graham, Wade Guyton, Pierre Huyghe, Sergej Jensen, Anish Kapoor, Karen Kilimnik, Rachel Kneebone, Glenn Ligon, Nick Mauss, Richard Phillips, Richard Prince, Ugo Rondinone, Wolfgang Tillmans, Banks Violette, and Christopher Wool.

Nomad Two Worlds Family Activities Day
Pier 59 Studios West (Santa Monica)

Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) invites families and organizations in the LA area to come experience Nomad Two Worlds, an exhibition featuring art by Australian Indigenous artists as well as Native American and Haitian artists. Kids are told the story of the clash of ancient civilizations with the modern world, the AU Apology and of the importance of a renewed cultural pride. The day will include didjeridoo lessons, painting, music, video, and dance activities.
Elizabeth Taylor in Iran: Photographs by Firooz Zahedi
LACMA (Mid-Wilshire)

In 1976, Elizabeth Taylor visited Iran for the first and only time, accompanied by photographer Firooz Zahedi, a then-recent art school graduate. Zahedi returned to his home country for the first time, and simultaneously captured Taylor's experiences through Persepolis, Shiraz, and Isfahan in a series of personal, candid, and creative images.
Claire Rojas: Inside Bleak
PRISM (West Hollywood)

The opening reception for a solo exhibition of work by San Francisco-based artist Clare Rojas. Transforming the gallery space, the exhibition features what Rojas calls "domestic abstract interiors," the newest installment of her ongoing investigation of domesticity. Her works and their homespun aesthetic are nested within a larger site-specific installation that also serves as the stage for a set of videos and a performance by Peggy Honeywell.
