FRIDAY, JULY 13

Venice Beach Biennial

Opening day of the Venice Beach Biennial, a weekend event that will turn the Venice Beach boardwalk into an outdoor exhibition venue. Over the course of the weekend, more than 50 artists will set up vending stands alongside veteran boardwalk artists, exhibiting new bodies of work, collaborating with veterans on new projects, displaying site-specific sculptures or installations, and presenting live performances. This event is directed by Hammer curator Ali Subotnick. The Venice Beach Biennial will continue on Saturday, July 14 from 11 a.m.-sunset and Sunday, July 15 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Exhibition openings include: Maurizio Vetrugno's Love, Commas and Asterisks, "No Person May Carry a Fish Into a Bar" curated by Julian Hoeber and Alix Lambert, and "Standard Operating Procedures" curated by Piper Marshall and featuring works including Nikolas Gambaroff, Alex Israel, John Miller, Olivier Mosset, and many others at Blum & Poe; Kevin Appel's "Paintings," and Iva Gueorguieva's "Recoiling Earth" at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects; "Acirema" curated by Cesar Garcia at Honor Fraser; and Nathan Mabry, Djordje Ozbolt and Francis Upritchard's "Bush of Ghosts" at Cherry and Martin. Exhibition openings include: "Dirty Funk" at ACME. at 6 p.m. features works by artists Alika Cooper, Michael Decker, Samara Golden, Paul Heyer, Barry Johnston, Davida Nemeroff, and Mark A. Rodriguez; "Creativity Explored" at Ambauch & Rice at 6 p.m. features works by artists including Peter Cordova, Ricardo Estella, Camille Holvoet, and Andrew Li; and Jeppe Hein, Heather Carson, Daniel Buren, Laurie Lipton, Mary Corse, and Carl Andre openings at ACE Gallery at 7 p.m. Also check out "Inter ruption: A Break in the Continuity of the Interstitial Space" at Michael Kohn Gallery at 6 p.m. If you're in the area on Thursday, July 12, check out "COME IN! les femmes" at the A+D Museum from 6-9 p.m.; tickets cost $20 and are available online.

SUNDAY, JULY 15

This two day market will feature handmade art, clothing, jewelry and more by local designers. The largest independent design show in the country, "Unique LA" will feature products from more than 325 designers and artists. The event will feature DJs, free drinks, free craft projects, workshops and more. Admission is $10 at the door.

2012 Artillery Debates

This event, presented by "Artillery" magazine, will feature figures from the Los Angeles art world debating topics including museums, the art market, and LACMA's "Levitated Mass." Winners will be determined by audience votes. Debaters include Mat Gleason, Mario Cutajar, Lane Barden, Ezrha Jean Black, and more.

Bob Law: Castle XXXIX, 1976
Redling Fine Art (Hollywood)

Opening reception for an exhibition of works by the late British minimalist artist Bob Law. "Castle XXXIX, 1976" will explore themes related to what composes an artist's breadth of work. On view through August 18, 2012.

Ghost Town

This party and art exhibition will feature performances by Tenacious D and Haim and works by artists including John Baldessari, Sam Durant, Mark Hagen, Amanda Ross-Ho, Alexis Smith and more. VIP admission begins at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by Gjelina, Christophe Happillon and other local Venice establishments. VIP tickets cost $200 in advance and $250 at the door. General admission begins at 8 p.m. General admission tickets cost $100 in advance and $150 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Venice Family Clinic.
