Do Not Disturb: The Most Exciting (And Underrated) New Apple Feature

Posted: 06/11/2012 8:41 pm

The most thrilling new iPhone feature unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday wasn't the fancy schmancy new Maps app, the long-awaited integration with Facebook, or even Siri's new mastery of sports trivia.

It's a feature that will actually get you off your iPhone: Do Not Disturb.

The Do Not Disturb tool marks a refreshing admission by a tech company that we actually have a life beyond our gadgets, and for all the good it does them to be wedded to our devices, every now and again we need to trade FaceTime for face-to-face time.

When Do Not Disturb is activated, a user's phone can still receive incoming calls, messages and other notifications, but won't alert her until later, keeping the iPhone's screen dark, its vibrations still and its tones silent.

Is it a gamechanger that will send Apple's stock price soaring past $1,000 a share and leave Google quaking in its boots? Certainly not. Is it something that will make life a little more peaceful, our conversations a little more focused, and our rest a bit more restful? Definitely.

I, for one, hope this will eradicate the annoying habit I have of sneaking a glance at my phone under the dinner table, or spending the final half of a play wondering why my phone keeps vibrating (Text message from a mystery number? Emergency work email? Family crisis?). Hopefully the tool will also help restore the sanctity of sleep and keep me from reaching for the phone, blurry eyed, at all hours of the night.

Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software, Scott Forstall, apparently shares my plight.

"Many of you are like me who've been awakened in the middle of the night," said Forstall when he debuted Do Not Disturb, just minutes after Apple bragged it has sent 1.5 trillion buzzing, bong-ing push notifications. "This tells your phone not to bother you with interruptions."

If you're a doctor who gets life-or-death calls about medical emergencies or a tech journalist who gets life-or-death calls about Apple rumors, you can rest easy: Do Not Disturb will disturb you if you receive multiple calls in a row from select phone numbers. Users can also specify that certain people are allowed to interrupt them and program Do Not Disturb to turn on and off at scheduled times. Not yet available is the ability to remotely activate Do Not Disturb on other people's iPhones, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Here's a peek at Do Not Disturb, which will be available on iOS 6, via Engadget (Check out more of their WWDC coverage right here):

If you need Apple to create something that reassures you it's OK to have a life beyond your Iphone, clearly your don't have your priorities straight.

As previously stated, this feature already exists on all phones. It's called the power button.

No biggie. A user always has the option to turn his phone off when he doesn't want to be bothered.

I've been using Google Voice very much as my PBX for years, and I do all this and more. In fact I've been with GV before they were a part of Google. I've been with them since they were Grand Central. I consider GV best in class. I tend to use it features rather similar features on my VoIP or my mobile.

Turning your iPhone off is useful, but I rarely do. I still want access to the Internet, my emails and even the time. My iPhone is my travel clock at night. I love the idea of being able to allow my kids to reach me while my iPhone holds all other calls, etc. It's really a brilliant idea. So go ahead, Android, turn off your phone entirely whenever you please. The rest of us are moving on.

Google Voice has been doing all this and more (way more) for a quite a while now. Google Voice is awesome. So there is no need to turn off an Android phone.

I have had this feature on my android for atleast 9 months..it's called smart actions. I can also program many other things such as when i'm at a certain destination my phone automatically turns on wifi connects to the correct network and when i leave that destination it turns wireless off. When i have a meeting scheduled on my calender my phone automatically turns the ringer off for the duration of the scheduled meeting and even replies with a message that i'm in a meeting. When I plug in my headphones my phone automatically opens my prefered music program and starts it. I can even program my phone to go silent at certain destinations i frequent like the movie theatre or my favorite place to eat. The Android OS moved way past the Iphone OS years ago...just sayin

I just turn off my phone, and check for messages later. What's such a big deal about this?
09:24 AM on 06/13/2012
I guess it depends on your situation. I'd like to have a quiet dinner out but wouldn't mind getting the call from my security service calling if my burglar alarm is set off.

On my phone, I can set the phone to silent, and set selected incoming numbers to an audible or vibrate ringtone.

Why not the ability to turn off your caller id at your choosing? If I want to make a phone call without showing my cell number, I can't do it unless I call Verizon to add/change a feature. This feature is so basic to any phone that it makes the iPhone 4 just plain stupid.

Teaches self reliance.

There will be times in life when Mommy won't be there to help.

(I was 50 when I bought my first cell phone. Traveled the world without one and survived to tell about it.)

Android has about a dozen apps that do exactly the same thing, and I can choose the one I want, not the one the Cult Of Steve chooses to spoon feed me. NEXT!

Leave it to fanboys to need an app that replaces the off button but still drains the battery. Crapple is SOOOOOOOOOO overrated.

The only fanboy involved here is clearly you.
