Do Not Disturb: The Most Exciting (And Underrated) New Apple Feature

Posted: 06/11/2012 8:48 pm

The most exciting (and underrated) new iPhone feature unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference on Monday wasn't the fancy schmancy new Maps app, the long-awaited integration with Facebook, or even Siri's new mastery of sports trivia.

It's a feature that will actually get you off your iPhone: Do Not Disturb.

The Do Not Disturb tool marks a refreshing admission by a tech company that we actually have a life beyond our gadgets, and for all the good it does to be wedded to our devices, every now and again we need to trade FaceTime for face-to-face time.

When Do Not Disturb is activated, a user's phone can still receive incoming calls, messages and other notifications, but won't alert her until later, keeping the iPhone's screen dark, its vibrations still and its tones silent.

Is it a gamechanger that will send Apple's stock price soaring past $1,000 a share and leave Google quaking? Certainly not. Is it something that will make life a little more peaceful, our conversations a little more focused, and our rest a bit more restful? Definitely.

I, for one, hope this will eradicate the annoying habit I have of sneaking a glance at my phone under the dinner table, or spending the final half of a play wondering why my phone keeps vibrating (Text message from a mystery number? Emergency work email? Family crisis?). Hopefully the tool will also help restore the sanctity of sleep and keep me from reaching for the phone, blurry eyed, at all hours of the night.

Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software, Scott Forstall, apparently shares my plight.

"Many of you are like me who've been awakened in the middle of the night," said Forstall when he debuted Do Not Disturb, just minutes after Apple bragged it has sent 1.5 trillion buzzing, bong-ing push notifications. "This tells your phone not to bother you with interruptions."

If you're a doctor who gets life-or-death calls about medical emergencies or a tech journalist who gets life-or-death calls about Apple rumors, you can rest easy: Do Not Disturb will disturb you if you receive multiple calls in a row from select phone numbers. Users can also specify that certain people are allowed to interrupt them and program Do Not Disturb to turn on and off at scheduled times. Not yet available is the ability to remotely activate Do Not Disturb on other people's iPhones, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Here's a peek at Do Not Disturb, which will be available on iOS 6, via Engadget (Check out more of Engadget's WWDC coverage right here):

If you are anything like me - stuck in a technology loop - then the feature is a god-sent. It's a fantastic thing to finally have something that will de-slave me from my various gadgets and devices. Thanks for sharing, all I need now is to buy an iPhone. Bummer.

So instead of the ringer off. you can select certain folks, like your spouse or children to override the "off" if you want. Sweet.

I think that is awesome as well!

It will be a great way to disconnect for a while. I imagine that most of our society needs to do this for sanity sake. :)

Bianca I didn't mean to jump the gun on translator app. Some of these apps on phones could be the difference between an undocumented alien with an I phone being able to ask for help and saving his child and being arrested for not being able to speak English when he doesn't present documents of U.S. citizenship to an arresting officer who doesn't understand Spanish or any other foreign language.
On the other hand the Do not Disturb App has the same as the ones on hotel and motel doors. When cleaning crew comes around they usually ignore them. And another thing what if a child calls his or her parent that the other parent took a nap while driving. How are they going to know if the app is activated?

Excellent. Now cheaters will have a great excuse for 'missing calls'.

Doesn't the darn thing have an OFF button?

yup. But this feature will allow calls from the people you select to over ride that - if you choose.

Hey, that's great Apple... and Imma let you finish but...

...does anyone have any idea why my HuffPo notifications display 48, but then when I click it says "No notifications" ? It started at 6, then went up from there. I still see most notifications I think, but after I go through them, it stops at 48 and says no new ones. I've emailed the HP tech support but they don't seem to care. Anyone else having this problem?

"When Do Not Disturb is activated, a user's phone can still receive incoming calls, messages and other notifications, but won't alert her until later, keeping the iPhone's screen dark, its vibrations still and its tones silent".

But, if you do that, then the recipient won't be able to take all those "1 in 10" adults who are SEXTING messages to him/'her!!!

These Apple programmer's are just not keeping up with the latest "polling results" on what is going on with messaging incoming to their Iphone's!

As a workaround I put my phone into airplane mode at night; on vacations I change mail retrieval from Push to Manual and make sure I don't click the mail app :)
