Prior to motherhood, the thought of merely discussing bodily functions in public embarrassed me. I'm a fucking well-raised Southern lady (and ex-pageant girl!) after all. Some women say that once they've endured the physical indignities of pregnancy and birth, they are no longer embarrassed by anything. For me, it was more like, once I was in that fugue-state of sleep deprivation and constant adrenaline-inducing stress, I no longer had the metal energy to be humiliated. I suspect it also had something to do with my relationship to men in general. When single, life was all about being attractive to potential mates. But after being married for almost a decade and then having my husband watch an eight-pound baby come out of my lady bits, I really don't care what other males of the world think about me.
And this inability to care about what dudes (or anyone else for that matter) thought gave me a new found freedom as an actress and writer. Because you know what's funny? Ugly stuff. Gross stuff. The stuff of actual life. And you know what are simultaneously really gross AND the beautiful/graceful/wonderful? Babies.
I CAN still stay classy when I need to. At a work event for my husband or a cocktail party given by my mother-in-law. But mostly, I don't feel the need to any longer. Because life is short. And I'm fucking tired.
