Steele: I'll Woo Blacks To GOP With "Fried Chicken And Potato Salad"

What's Your Reaction?

The Young Republicans convention was held in Indianapolis last weekend and their election of a racist, middle-aged woman as President isn't the only controversial item to come out of the GOP gathering.

Local Republican blog Hoosier Access was able to get RNC Chairman Michael Steele to sit down with a group of bloggers and they taped the conversation. The old gaffe-o-matic (or as I like to call him, the Republican Joe Biden!) answers a question from a gay person of color in this clip about the GOP's diversity outreach.

Yes, that's right. To lure African-Americans into the GOP, Steele is offering "fried chicken and potato salad." Since he mentions Republicans should also be reaching out to the LGBT community, I wonder what stereotype he's going to offer us? Buttplugs and Birkenstocks?

(Crossposted from my home blog, Bilerico Project. Come visit me there to see why both the Washington Post and the Advocate named us one of the top 10 LGBT political blogs in the nation.)

I think the words racist and bigot get used way too much. Sometimes, it's just because they are stupid.

Carolyn Maloney was wrong for using the N word, it was a dumb thing to say. I wouldn't call her racist or a bigot, just a politician who really needs to watch her words, especially in this 24/7 and youtube world we live in.

Barbara Boxer wasn't one either, when she called out Harry Alford who is the head of the National Black Chamber of Commerce (for all those who don't know is far more Republican). He has a habit of stating his beliefs as facts concerning all black folks. I have followed his career he doesn't like the NAACP or any similar group.

As far as Michael Steele goes, he is just a foolish token of the Republican Party. He was elected so that the GOP wouldn't come off racist when ever they went after President Obama. If he didn't keep putting his foot in his mouth, he might be effective. I can safely say that as a black man, my community has very little respect for him. He is viewed as somewhat a joke, even within the Republican black community.

On a lighter note, does anyone think that Michael Steele reminds you of Officer "Hoppy" Hopkins from Sanford and Son. Remember the white cop who tried to use slang and always got it wrong. His partner Officer "Smitty" Smith, the black officer then translates everything he says.

So just to reiteriate: When Michael Steele says "Fried Chicken" (with no mention of the words "black people" , its offensive. When Carolyn Maloney says N*****, its wonderful!

I thought Potato Salad was an Irish dish? Didn't it start with the Irish?

Steele is unbelievable. I predict that he "resigns" immediately after the 2010 election. He is a liability.

Not a fan of Mr Steele, but I have to agree with those pointing out the headline as being misleading. The point I laugh more about, and do so when any Republican uses the defense, is when they say the Republican party is the party of Lincoln which suggests to me that was the last time the party has done any reaching out to minorities.

Does he have limited historical knowledge of his own party? As some posters have pointed out that when in 1965, Lyndon Johnson enacted the Civil Rights legislation, he basically created a shift in both the Democrat and Republican party, shaping them into what they have become today.

The party only has to just make a small observation when it comes to the message he's trying to preach about reaching for diversity. Look within their own ranks, and at the crowd during a Republican party event. What you'll likley see in the crowd doesn't visually represent the true diversity that is in reality the United States. With no diverse thinking, opinions and/or experience, how can you effectively represent a diversified environment? Better let some of that businessman mentailty come into the moderate age because the world is going to continue to evolve with or without them. That's like an 8-track cassette vs an iPod...and if you don't know what an 8-track is...that's just the point. It's analog thinking in a high-def digital world.

Micheal Steele is comic relief for Black America. We don't take him seriously. Blacks are not interested in the GOP's dysfunctional, self destructive, psuedo-christian, psycho-babble. At the end of the day, the Christian Coalition, NRA, and pre-paid Republican Congressmen that represent the pharmaceutical industry agree ,on one thing , "SHOW ME THE MONEY". They don't represent the people. Shame on them!!

There is nothing more degrading than lumping your self, soul, and mind into some strange homogenous group like "Black America".

You make yourself easy prey for the those looking to placate you in exchange for your freedom.

This headline was an over-reach. He responded, somewhat humorously, to someone in the audience who said he would bring the collard greens, so there is no story there, in fact it was surprisingly witty.

The story is when he says that ALL PEOPLE are free according to the Constitution, and that the Republicans are the party of freedom. Now that's the Headline.

"Republicans are the party of freedom."

-Unless you're gay and want to marry.

-Unless you're poor, unmarried, and want an abortion.

-Unless you're a CIA agent who reports the truth.

-Unless you're a parent of young children in Washington DC who wants tougher gun laws.

An abortion, by current federal law, is the removal of life from a fetus not yet past the first trimester of a pregnancy. By this definition, that life is the sole property of the mother until the child grows beyond its first trimester. A reasonable individual will conclude that the life the instant before the first trimester and the instant after, is unrecognizably different. So, if that life was once owned by the mother, the state has defined a time in which it is OK for a human being to be a slave. Strike two.

The CIA is a federal government agency prescribed to protect the citizenry by oath. If by speaking the truth the agent compromises the safety of a citizen and thereby her freedom, then they have violated the oath. A baseball catcher can speak the truth to the opposing team's hitter, but it's not a good idea if you're committed to preventing runs from being scored. Strike three.

Using the federal government to prevent a parent from owning a gun to protect their children, not only endangers the child but would eliminate your freedom to protect yourself. You're Out!

And by out, I mean way out there. You may never be able to retrieve your soul.

Agreed. The more interesting thing here is that Steele's evasive response to the question is basically: "nothing". He just says that the party is open to everyone who agrees with it, but doesn't mention any sort of outreach or alteration to the platform that might make it more appealing to moderates of all stripes.

The only reason this is in the news is because, no one knows what White people eat. I mean we make fun of Mexicans for eating refried beans, Asians for eating rice and Blacks for eating chicken and watermelon. What White person does not eat at least one of the things I just mentioned? Dave Chappelle tackled this subject and he came up with what White people drink, but he never came up with what they eat. So would some White person tell me what it is that you eat that makes you all so different from the rest of us?

I like chicken (though I try to stick with grilled rather than fried), I love watermelon, catfish, and many of the other stereotypical "black" foods. I think the stereotypes just developed as a means for people to point their finger at those they felt were inferior, and they've carried on from there- sometimes invoked in a good-natured way and sometimes not so much.

As a white person for 100% of my life I can, with some authority, say that we white people like to eat white foods. My mother served us white bread and mayo sandwiches with milk for lunch most days. Dinner might be mashed potatoes, cauliflower and boiled chicken. You get the idea. I don't think it had so much to do with the COLOR of the food as the TASTE. When push comes to shove, my people will pick BLAND over color any day.

Macaroni and cheese. Three times a day. Every day. Now you know their dark secret, and for that you must die.

"I must die"...Eating that garbage three times a day every day, and you'll definitely go before I will. Even if I'm 60 already and you're 40. Statistics is on my side big-time, but I will take your bets.

Liberals whine about republicans not working in a bipartisan manner but what do ya'll do, block EVERYTHING republicans present, there is a bigger world out there than that of yours liberals

I don't think either the blogger's or Steele's comments were that bad- they were clearly joking around. However, I think most of those bloggers were conservative, so if someone could just as well take offense at the collard greens comment and blame Republicans for that too.

I do think it's unfair for the article to try to focus on what was obviously a bit of humor, like a game of "gotcha".

Yeah, Mike, that oughta do it.

Go ahead and imply that all African-Americans are as shallow and superficial as you are. That's the way to win votes, by insulting the heck out of an entire segment of the electorate.

This guy is unbelievable.

Don't know if you do already, but take off the skin before eating and also check out the ingredients in the potato salad beforehand. Seriously. Also, ever heard of high blood pressure? e.g., "prepared" collard greens are usually overloaded with sodium. This is not the place to go on about bad food choices, but reflect for a moment on the U.S. obesity rates and the HBP rates - without knowing the stats offhand, it appears to me to be even higher for blacks.
