New Rule: Stop Saying "Sex Addict" Like It's a Bad Thing

Posted: 2/26/10

New Rule: Stop saying "sex addict" like it's bad thing. In the wake of Tiger Woods' heartfelt apology that he gave to his fans, his friends, his foundation - and just to be safe, Elizabeth Edwards - the media has been interviewing sex addicts: on CNN one addict said, "The day Mount Saint Helens blew up, everyone was talking about it. But I didn't even know it happened because I was having sex all that day." Oh, the humanity! Please get this man some professional help soon, before he has a hot three-way and completely misses a tornado.

Now, I haven't commented on Tiger Woods much because, well, he's just a golfer and it took me this long to give a shit. But all this talk about sex addiction now - please - sex addiction is just something Dr. Drew made up because he had no other way to explain Andy Dick. And that's not just me saying that - it's also the American Psychiatric Association, which does not list sex addiction in its manual; it does not regard it as a real psychological syndrome, like delirium or bipolar disorder or any of the other things Glenn Beck suffers from.

You want to know the surest way that you can spot a "sex addict?" He's got a penis. That's why Tiger was having sex with more women than even a black celebrity needs to have sex with, and thereby threatening to unbalance the delicate ecosystem of playas and ho's.

But before Tiger moves on there's one more apology he really should make, and that's to Buddha, for dragging him into this mess and proving once again, that whenever something unspeakably tawdry, loathsome and cheap happens, just wait a few days. Religion will make it worse.

Now usually, when famous cheaters are looking for public redemption, they go to Jesus, but Tiger went old school, and claimed that sleeping with 2/3 of the waitresses in America had made him a failure as a Buddhist. He said Buddhism teaches you the way to inner peace is letting go of desire - and if that doesn't sound like marriage, I don't know what does.

Personally, if I was a golfer, I'd go with Jesus - because he's a Trinity, so when you walk with him, you've got a foursome. Christianity is for rubes. Buddhism is for actors.

And it really is outdated in some ways - the "Life sucks, and then you die" philosophy was useful when Buddha came up with it around 500 B.C., because back then life pretty much sucked, and then you died - but now we have medicine, and plenty of food, and iPhones, and James Cameron movies - our life isn't all about suffering anymore. And when we do suffer, instead of accepting it we try to alleviate it.

Tiger said, "Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves" makes us unhappy, which confirms something I've long suspected about Eastern religions: they're a crock, too.

Craving for things outside ourselves is what makes life life - I don't want to learn to not want, that's what people in prison have to do. Buddhism teaches suffering is inevitable. The only thing that's inevitable is that if you have fake boobs and hair extensions, Tiger Woods will try to fuck you.

And reincarnation? Really? If that were real, wouldn't there be some proof by now? A raccoon spelling out in acorns, "My name is Herb Zoller and I'm an accountant." ...something?

People are always debating, is Buddhism a religion or a philosophy: it's a religion. You're a religion if you do something as weird as when the Buddhist monks scrutinize two-year-olds to find the reincarnation of the dude who just died, and then choose one of the toddlers as the sacred Lama: "His poop is royal!" Sorry, but thinking you can look at a babbling, barely-housebroken, uneducated being and say, "That's our leader" doesn't make you enlightened. It makes you a Sarah Palin supporter.

I agree. All successful species are sex addicts. Now we just need to become condom addicts because we are crowding out and killing off the other life on the planet. We need to study and cure religion and fem!n!sm addicts that hate sex and the males of the species. Going to whine about porn and rape? Ease up on the prostitution laws. Countries with free market sex do not have near the issues the West has.

Bill, you're a disgusting little man. If you love this country then why is it every time someone exercises their right to free speech you feel it's your place to tell them to shut up if you don't agree with them. If you were a true patriot or even a descent human being, you would see that you incite more violence then the incite more violence than the entire Tea Party.

You don't agree with us, big deal. I wouldn't want all of you spoiled Hollywood brats anyway. You talk of social justice and how we are the party of no. You, living on your high horse wouldn't know social justice if it smacked you in the face. Democrats have been much more violent recently, and basically always. You keep holding on to Hope and Change and that's all you'll have left.

Oh come on, Bill. Now you're taking definitions of Buddhism from Tiger Woods' random remarks? Please. Buddhism isn't a set of "beliefs" and you're not required to believe in reincarnation to be a Buddhist. You're mixing it up with other religions. Sure, some Buddhists believe in reincarnation, but even then it's a matter that's up for empirical investigation; it's questionable like everything else in Buddhism. The only central tenets for most sects of Buddhism have to do with the way the mind works, our relationship to the world, etc., not beliefs like reincarnation or anything else.

As far as the thing Tiger talked about --- he was talking about the problem with "grasping", which is to say going overboard with desire, not any old desire. Buddhism is not against desire, it's not about asceticism. Tiger Woods is no Buddhist sage... talk to some real Buddhists if you want to know about Buddhism!

Dear Mr. Maher,

My wife and I would like to let you know that we appreciate what you do with your work. You could very well just be funny, but you choose to do more. Thank you.

I was also hoping I could interest you enough in two topics that you might perhaps ponder them, or even discuss with your friends. In no particular order:

a state of apartheid exists. it is through economics that it is realized.

the incessant repetition of provocative messages in the media triggers responses in the human brain that are predictable.

good on ya.

Bill you're awesome. Keep up the good work, you're my weekly dose of sanity, seriously. In a very pardoxical way, you're one of the few reasons I am still a little proud to be American. I live in Europe, where sex isn't a bad thing, and smoking pot is basically legal, and health care is free, and cops are actually there to serve and protect and not to bash your head in if you look at them funny... and it would be so easy to dismiss America as a whole, but then there's always football and special effects and MGMT and Bill Maher, so I can't really dismiss all of it, some of it just downright fantastic...

In his critique of religious sentiment, Bill misunderstands Eastern religion, especially Buddhism, a tradition which does not presuppose any supreme being or human 'soul'; in fact, it is radically agnostic. He subscribes to classical humanism, a central tenet of which is that reason and technology can improve the human condition. Looking at the world today, the evidence just does not bear this out. Buddhism is closer to the "truth": life sucks, and the world does not exist to cater to our needs. Bill: junk the ideological humanism, read Schopenhauer, and get back to politics--that's why we watch you.

I watch Maher for comedy and to hear his good perspectives on many topics. I like politics, but he's a comedian - not a religious sage - who covers many areas.

Oh Bill how I miss your show Politically Incorrect! When you speak I always am nodding my head in agreement and laughing my butt off! Keep up the good work. Instead of being a Sex Addict and acting like he can't help himself, why doesn't he just admit he has an ego bigger than God and thought he could do whatever he wanted without any conseqences. Now he is caught and tries to blame it on an addiction. I guess many other professional male atheletes also have this addiction b/c I heard it's really common for them to sleep around with fans and women from every city they visit. Maybe they should all get together and start a sex group for professional athletes and even throw in some artists and movie stars so they can stop all of this non-stop sex and just stay home with their wives.

The abuses of the word "addiction" in these comments are ludicrous. There is no such thing as a love addict, sex addict, porn, gambling, televion, internet, or golf club addict. That is absurd propaganda to sell books by holy rollers. The clinical definition of addiction is "symtomatic of withdrawal." Needless to say, the propagandists truly cheapen the problems of people who have real addictions.

For heavens sake, I agree lighten up and laugh a little, who knows for sure what lurks in the minds of some people especially like Tiger who have everything and often seem to need to achieve other highs...let's hope he's able to pull it together if not for his family for himself, as hopefully he has a long life to live yet and truly deserves some peace if it's attainable..

And Bill Maher, one of life's secrets is not taking this world and all it's gloom too seriously, so laugh as much as you can it's a fact it's good for your health...and Bill keep up the good work..this 63 year old grandma thinks highly of you and loves to read your stuff....

It is just another way to make money, sell therapy, and sell books, and really good for tv ratings. Might as well comdemn someone for being human. But the problem really is our expectations which is the repression that keeps driving our thirst for wars and the urges to get outside of staid repressed social convention and achieve the simple solutions of blowing things up and destruction, a little taste of rape and pillage. Free flowing sexual urges and a morality based on it is only a remote potentiality for the human race being unable to balance body and mind we are supposed to be at war with ourselves as much as we are with the rest of the world.

As for Buddhism don't be so superficial. There is no you to stay inside of and no out there to stay away from. There is only an inside with no outside. As for suffering there is only trying to be what you are not which is where Tiger got caught!!

To all the people with their long critiques of Maher's take on Buddha, sex and all things in between --

Have you noticed that this is posted in the COMEDY section? Not religion, philosophy, news, entertainment or even living. Maher is a satirist. This post is really quite funny, particularly the Andy Dick crack. If it offends you, don't laugh. But please, spare us your lengthy, pedantic discourses on these subjects. You must know what you're getting when you read Maher. He's not a scholar, a professor, an esteemed political commenter, an avowed expert on anything. His an atheistic, pot smoking, pretension-bashing stand-up comic with a sharp tongue and great writers.

Laugh a little!
