Because of the "gay games" sponsorship by our company, Kraft Foods may at some future date be found to be complicit and legally liable in a case in which a young attendee at the "gay games" decides to experiment with homosexual encounters and later develops a serious, even fatal, illness. -- Dr. Marcella Meyer
It's always revealing to look into the background of the enemy. The face of this morning's enemy is Dr. Marcella Meyer, the Kraft shareholder who tried to bully the company, by proxy, to revoke its support for the Chicago Gay Games. Wisely, and shrewdly, the shareholders defeated her proposal by 99%. Now, most of them were probably not taking a political stand -- Kraft's $25,000 contribution to the event may just be good business. After all, the gays are spiking sales of Crystal Light with their vodka cocktail, the Crystal Carrington.
But for the loser, "Doctor" Marcella Meyer, the motivation was purely political. You see, the last time loser Marcella lost, was when she presented the American College of Preventative Medicine with her dubious "policy resolution" to get the ACPM to endorse her brand of Abstinence Education in schools. The group shot down her proposal, first in February, 2001, then again in October of that year. They even went so far as to question the integrity of her research and study results. Her proposal provided clever semantics, arguing all children should be taught that sex should only be permitted within a legally recognized marriage. And of course she opposes gay marriage, so, as the ACPM noted, where exactly does that leave the reality of gay people with sex lives? Perhaps reality isn't of that much concern to Doc Meyer and those of her ilk.
A glance into the loser Doctor's past reveals her support of The New Coalition, a group of Conservative Blacks that downplays Rosa Parks, holds global warming is not a big deal, and thinks gun control is for idiots. They believe Clarence Thomas is an utter genius, and helped the Heritage Foundation publish 4,000 copies of a book to inform the media and others that "most Blacks are not liberal." That's what Doctor Marcella Meyer does with her hard-earned Kraft stock dividends.
So yes, well done to the Kraft gang for resisting her hateful proposal. But just a quick glance into this right-wing pawn, very busy as she is, running around Chicago trying to curtail civil liberties, sporting events and sex lives, shows us that many of these issues are connected in terms of those who back them. And while many of us may not be particularly concerned about events like the Gay Games, we should be very concerned about who is opposing them and why.
