The Curious Case of Trayvon Martin: Justice Miscarried and Other Crimes of Consciousness

Posted: 03/22/2012 11:32 am

"He killed my son."

Words no father should ever utter, and yet that these words hang in the atmosphere over Sanford, Fla., like humidity on a dank summer's eve; like an echo unanswered, demanding recompense.

Tracey Martin's outcry at the killing of his 17-year-old son, Trayvon, armed only with a bag of Skittles and a bottle of Arizona Tea -- cut down in the prime of life while walking to a friend's house -- has set off a firestorm of protests.

I join my voice to the growing list of "The Outraged."

How can a father reconcile such an inexplicable act? How can he deal with such palpable grief? As a father and grandfather myself, I know that injustice is not something you necessarily define for your offspring. It is something you feel viscerally, share experientially and recognize when you see it. It alarms the senses, raises the hair on the back of one's neck, and brings to the forefront of memory, tales of atrocities past, handed down generation to generation like fine linen.

The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed all citizens equal protection under the law, and yet in this moment we are aggrieved over such a misappropriation of the very justice that so many gave their lives to achieve.

It is evolving into a case of two justices: separate and, like Jim Crow laws, far from equal.
From the apparent racial profiling, overt violation of neighborhood watch protocols and real-time police directives, to accusations of tampered evidence, to the failure to undertake reasonable measures afforded by the law, I count a multitude glaring discrepancies. How did "The System" fail to ensure that this boy's life was not inconsequential?

As a citizen, I understand that no case is all black or all white, despite appearances to the contrary. I realize that justice is fraught with nuances, not the very least of which is Florida's "stand your ground" law, which was designed to protect threatened parties, and in all irony of all ironies appears to be the very thing keeping the instigator out of prison, in complete contrast to the spirit of the controversial pro-gun law.

How can we trust the law when it fails to provide minimal protection for the victim and allows a killer to walk freely, virtually unexamined by police at the time of the crime or since?

To quote the accepted legal maxim, "Justice delayed is justice denied."

What's not so complicated is that the history of misconduct by the local police and a corresponding mistrust by the community which made an immediate call for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to step in to underscore their knowing apprehension that the law would not protect them.

As a pastor, I am not unfamiliar with evil. It is pre-existent and pervasive in our world. It is defined as "immoral and injurious, characterized by misfortune or suffering; unfortunate; disastrous," words that also describe this case.

Now is the time where mere words fail if not accompanied by deliberate action.

It is the time to raise the standards of scrutiny and call in the Stanford Police into account. We must move beyond the confines of state law and the ongoing perversions of justice.

The Department of Justice must be brought in to ensure that this atrocity is righted and that a killer is made to pay for the unrighteous taking of another human life and, so far, without retribution.

We must encourage all who claim to value human life to stand up for this young man so his voice is not muted in the earth. He is a symbol for those who might for one moment think that the work of civil rights was done in 1964. Think again. Desperate times call for decisive action.
This is not a wolf cry.

To me, this looks like a hate crime, pure and simple, informed by the deep-seated and unchallenged racial prejudices incubated in the ignorance of a man who took his role of protector far too seriously and further than it was ever intended or needed to go. He is now sustained by a "System" that were it not for the fact of its absolute absurdity which drew international media attention in the first place, would have gone unmarked, unnoticed and therefore unchallenged.

As a father, grandfather, citizen-pastor, I know that we can't afford to act as if this were an isolated case and allow our young men to be killed for the color of their skin rather than be praised for the content of their character.

We must bring a righteous legal and satisfactory moral conclusion to this atrocious miscarriage of justice and violation of all reasonable consciousness.

I do not doubt this is a hate crime that is being ignored.

I think as Christians we need to take very seriously the words "let he who has not sinned cast the first stone"....there is a lot of violence within the AA community. It feeds an already negative perception of this community.THe larger dialogue is about addressing all of the violence otherwise this poor kid's death would not have taught us anything. And that is a crime.

Time Magazine named Jakes the greatest preacher in America in 2011. That first of all as a christian scares me when a preacher does not retract such a statement. Second he is Hollywood and has been for a long time.I am sorry but Trayvon Martin is not a rummage sale or an attention getter. The young man lost his life---that's enough. Our nation is not in need of preachers joining the outraged after it becomes safe. We are in desperate need men and women who can wisely express the Love of thy neighbor in this country. Though Trayvons death is tragic, it is a far gone conclusion, violence among the youth of this country has escalated. Give America a preacher who can stop this, and he silently will be the greatest preacher in America.

I'm sorry, but your assertion is negative and a superficially hasty altogether. Any preacher or relatively regular intellectual would never go unnoticed as their ingenuity or genuineness can be used for the good of the masses. I can safely presume that Bishop Jakes did not intend to become a famous preacher. I can also presume that you are not much of a faithful believer as you discard the fact that God may be the investor behind his success. Initially, all the bishop has covered in his dialogue in consistent with the death of this young boy, and if you have discrepancies regarding his input, then why did you even conclude to click on the link which brought you to this article? Concerning your "Hollywood" comment, Bishop Jakes' socially conscious and morally reverent content in the movies he produces are a far stitch better than the crap that's currently overflooded the industry. Social change is coming, with Bishop Jakes as one of our leaders. "He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathers not with me scatters abroad." (Matthew 12:30)

Jakes always waits to see if the water is safe before he steps into anything high profile. You are saying nothing different then that that has already been said by the people who live the Trayvon life every day.

No, he actually thinks and ponders something before speaking, something many others could learn from.

He has you as on a string to dance to his beat. Pondering is one thing, but this matter didn't require much thinking. Follow who you want , but remember he is just a man, not your god.

Get real, Man. It was a thoughtful and powerful article with honest feelings.

You get real, open you eyes and will see a man. There was nothing powerful about what he said. You should have known most of what he said by studying your history.

The issue of racism in this case is steeped in a more sinister form. It is covert and indirect. The issue of racial profiling and stereotyping are what lend to the racist tones of this case. All things that should be apparent after all evidence is reviewed. Young, black, males have been and are at the receiving end of this form of racism more often than any other sub-group. Last I checked the unibomber and Tim McVeigh were White males, yet this population is hardly profiled in such a manner that those within the demographic have to fear for their lives based on the biases and prejudices of mainstream society....When this country is truly not afraid to have civil discourse about "real racism" that's when things will hopefully start to change...until then I will continue to wear my hoodie to workouts, always checking my back, and giving young Black boys the other "lesson" that will hoipefully prevent them from being "accidentally" shot by police or murdered by vigilantes...smh

I am sorry but since when does A CHILD running away, screaming why are you following me, and screaming HELP!!! qualify as a intimidating person who is about to commit a crime???!!!! You say that you were held up by TWO black teens, one of which held a gun to your head. I am sorry I don't see how Trayvon Martin is in ANYWAY is comparable to the scenario that you just described. He was a small, skinny black kid, who didn't even look 17, I would have guessed much younger looking at his photos and hearing the very child like cries of his voice, he hadn't even developed a man life bass to his voice yet. Zimmerman who is built like a NFL linebacker and outweighs him by at least 100 pounds was scared???!!! How you can even open your mouth to use this story to defend Zimmerman is completely ludicrous! The fact that Zimmerman stalked and then gunned down an innocent child who CLEARLY was not suspicious but scared and running from him and then lied to say he was defending himself is what the problem is. Perhaps since you are so comfortable with his actions you would be comfortable having him for your next door neighbor, just don't cry to us when he harms one of your child and finds an excuse to justify it!
01:14 PM on 03/24/2012
I only have one question If George Zimmerman feels that his actions were justified why does he not come out to speak to us in some way? Make a statement say something back up his action. He was man enough to take a stance to protect his neighborhood. Now man up to what you have done MAN UP!

God give Trayvon Martin's Family Peace put Hope in there Hearts and let them have Justice . and take Care of Him and let the people of the US have Peace there is way to many lost lifes at young ages .

A racist crime, without a doubt. This vigilante should join other white supremacists in prison.
10:44 AM on 03/23/2012
This goes beyond race. We have an angry trigger-happy society. And we have more and more powerful HOAs and condo associations run by bitter old people who go way beyond humane behavior to enforce their idea of a what a neighborhood should be every day. Zimmerman must be prosecuted as a murderer or you'll see an epidemic of similar crimes...neighbors killing neighbors. I just moved from a horrible upscale neighborhood in Rochester MI to escaped an HOA run amok. I shudder to think what would happen if those crazy, power-drunk HOA people felt justified in carrying weapons. When we went thru our nightmare, I discovered that there are 190,000 active HOA law suits in the US today....this acceleration of power among un-trained people who are drunk with mini-power is getting angrier. Plus we have enough of the tea party trying to make racism socially acceptable after decades of progress. Zimmerman was clearly guilty of racial profiling, but also being drunk with mini-power over his turf. He needs to be tried as a murderer.

Zimmerman is the murderer, but the problem is the officials and law enforcement of Sanford, Florida. There will always be another "George Zimmerman". The problem is a town that enables individuals like Zimmerman. Trayvon Martin's due process by the law was ignored when the Sanford Police let Zimmerman go with his gun. He should have been put into custody for homicide. Arrest Zimmerman, but hold the City of Sandford accountable.

First off I would like to say how sad it is in this day in time that we as Black People are still faced with this type of "INJUSTICE". I would like to say to America, that you are in for a real "NightMare" if this type of "INJUSTICE" continues, you are giving our Black Youth a real reason to "REBEL" againest anything right simply because they will feel in the eyes of white America they are "WRONG" anyway. An America really does'nt want that to take place, because you will be putting alot of "Innocent white people in "Danger". May GOD Help Us All!

I wish T.D. Jakes got this upset at the epidemic of black on black crime in America. A tragedy that goes largely ignored by the African American Culture. African Americans represent 12% of the population. Almost half of all murders committed in the U.S. last year were African Americans. A staggering statistic. It gets worse. 90% of African American murders were committed by African Americans. Where is the outrage, the protest, the articles from distinguished pastors? Hypocrisy? The Trayvon incident is a miscarriage of justice and a tragedy. But if we are going to scream racism because a latin-American man kills an African American child, what do we call it when most African Americans are killed by their own race? Shame on a pastor or any person who will use this tragedy to promote their personal agenda.

You are comparing apples to marbles....this is a case of murder of a young man, who was stalked by a perp, who was TOLD NOT TO FOLLOW HIM, by a police Dispatcher and he continued. Zimmerman is nothing but a "self-appointed" vigilante and he killed this child in cold blood and the police of Sanford botched what should have been an immedidate investigation of this crime scene. He was NOT supposed to carry a weapon on his so-called Community Watch. He was NOT trained by the same Police Dept. to be a watch Captain. This was racially motivated and should qualify as a Hate Crime...that carries a jail sentence. No one but you seems to care about black on black crime, because most Americans are so desensitized to murder that our value of human life in this country is in a huge decline. Until we address the social and economic inequality in this country black on black will continue. Whites also do their fair share of white on white crime. You are being selective in your perspective. I am glad to see Jakes and all ministers speak out about this specific incident...I am also white.
10:16 AM on 03/23/2012
According to the 911 call Zimmerman stated that "these $%$# always get away", and he was going to make sure this one didn't get away. His statement shows intent, and therefore was premeditated.

I am black and the community I live in is mixed with whites, hispanics, europeans and blacks. Every single robbery and hold-up was committed by a black young man. I was just held up six weeks ago by two black teenagers while exiting my car at 7:30 p.m.. They held a gun to my head and said they would kill me if I made any noise.

Although it is wrong to take a life, it does not help that black people are committing crimes at a horrendous rate.

Tes, and even tough you were robbed by black youn men, you will be seen as just another black man by people like Zimmerman. They don't see us as different from the hooligans in the neighborhood, instead they view ALL of us as the same, even if you are an educated, hard working and even the President of the USA. So, please get of your simpathies for these folks and report the black on black crime whenever you see it.
