In classic "Wag The Dog" scenario there is a neat little war brewing between American and Russian proxies, and real Russian troops, in the Caucacus Mountains on the Russian border.
It couldn't come at a better time for the Republicans.
McCain gets to act and talk tough against the Russians, while Obama is on vacation in Hawaii, issuing "can't we all get along statements."
It perfectly augments Republican campaign points: Obama is not ready. He is not tough, experienced enough to deal with a dangerous world.
McCain knows he can't win the election on Iraq or Iran or the economy. Republicans need a real boogeyman -- the Russian bear -- armed with nuclear weapons -- to really scare the bejesus out of the American voters.
What is most interesting is that McCain's chief foreign policy aide, Randy Scheunemann,
has been advising/ lobbying for pro-western Georgia for the last four years.
Can't you just imagine what happened?
Randy lets it be known to the Georgian President that this would be a good time for Georgian troops to invade South Ossetia, which had been an autonomous territory for more than a decade. The Georgians didn't take much persuading, as they had been wanting to crack down with their troops for a long time.....and now they felt they had some backup.
And with American -- Republican -- support, what a better time to act?
Meanwhile Bush is conveniently meeting with Putin at the Olympics in Beijing and lets it be known that if Georgia attacks Ossetia, the US will not "mind" -- Wink Wink -- an aggressive response from Russia.
Oh, we will talk tough, but we are not going to do anything..... And this mini crisis will be good for the Republicans in the 08 Presidential Election.
Classic Machiavellian maneuvers as adapted by Cheney and Rove.
Everybody wins.

the Russians had to watch us invade Iraq for OIL ( real oil from the ground up)
now they are invading Georgia for OIL ( pipeline geography )
so it's tit for tat
the U.S. has no moral authority ----- lost by Bush, the son----- to tell the Russians to stop their war, their invasion
it's all about balance, the balance of power, and if one side becomes weakened and inoperable an all out putsch to imbalance, as was the case with Hitler's invasion of Cechoslovakia
scary
the Cold War, it is not, more like the Warm War
HuffPost's Pick
This whole illegal maneuver reminds me of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.
Because of President Carter's apparent weakness, the Russian Bear walked right in and the rest is history..... 1. Osama Bin Laden gets in there to kick out the Bear and then in a psychosis of hubris from victory, bored by the post partum of liberated Afghanistan he eventually bloodies the American Tiger with his 9/11 attacks 2.then the US falls right into a trap Obama did not set, the invasion of Iraq to please Bush, the father, and with the result of bringing on the Jihad against the U.S. in a de-stabilized Afghanistan, critically damaged by the Russian invasion. Bush/Brown/Merkel all of them will do nothing. We just have to now wait for the history, as we had to do with Afghanistan's long ago attack by the Russian Bear.
I don't know if this post is just a clumsy attempt at satire, but it illustrates the difficulty of satirizing leftist views: the protean nature of obsessive leftist derangement always catches up to and trumps the most absurd and lurid comedy.

Are you saying we would get involved if we had all our troops?
I hope the decision not to go into Georgia is based on more than that!
In what reality would we start shooting directly at Russian troops?

If Russia is allowed to simply invade and annex Georgia, what is to stop them from re-capturing all Baltic states and former satellites???
Are we simply supposed to count on Russia's good will???
Michale.....
Wow. Is anything too stupid for HuffPo?
So, following Fleetwood's logic to an end: Georgia started the war to help McCain.
*Obviously.*
Even if what you're saying is true, it still doesn't account for Obama's awful response to the matter. He blamed McCain's lobbyist first? Truly awful.
This allows McCain to create his own 3AM. Can't you see it now? Obama is on vacation, war breaks out somewhere, he blames McCain first for being in the pocket of Big Georgia. Yeah... what an awful candidate Obama turned out to be.
Hillary?
You sir, are completely irrational or demented......
You should either seek professional help for your condition or just give up whatrever you're smoking 'cause it's making you paranoid...........
Unfortunately, the Russians are using the Georgians brash acts to justify military action against the former Soviet state.
And, the indiscriminate disregard for civilian casualties should be eye opening for those whose Bush derangement syndrome has blinded them to the US forces efforts to limit the same in Iraq-despite the disparate and hellish circumstances!
Whatevah you smokin'; where can I get it and how much do it cost.........
I don't think Georgia would have attacked Russia if they didnt feel they had backup. Something else is behind this and the truth will come out eventually
Please point to ANY evidence to support your outlandish contention that Georgia attacked Russia...
Michale.....
It doesn't matter whether you agree that South Ossetia is part of Russia, or even whether it really is. What matters is that Russia thinks of it that way.
This is exactly what Obama was talking about for 2 years.... We have everything tied up in Iraq..... Putin knows that .....He knows that the US is strapped and is helpless..... Exactly what Obama predicted would happen if a war was waged somewhere else. So now Johnnie is talking tough, unfortunately we don't have any more soldiers. We should be thankful that Russia didn't invade us. Even 16 months is too long to wait withdrawing our men and women. We should start bringing our troops home tomorrow.
"strapped and is helpless..."? Ha!
Try MOBILIZED.

Yeah, the US is terrified of the Russian military. You only need to look at their performance in Afghanistan and Chechnya to realize that.
Although I loves me a good conspiracy, in this case it doesn't seem likely to extend beyond that between the U.S. and Georgia, if we can call prodding them into striking against S. Ossetia a conspiracy. From all accounts, a sizable contingent of U.S. troops -- trainers, so called -- have been in Georgia for some time; Mr. Bush is trying to wedge Georgia into NATO; just as Putin goes to China, the Georgian attack begins; do the math. Mr. Putin looked like he had when he was caught on camera a couple of days ago angrily waving his finger in the Great Decider's face while they strolled together somewhere in China.
The good news is that had something like this happened 20 years ago, we'd now all be reading our bibles by the light from our nearest, smoldering metropolitan area.
This doesn't help McCain. The Republicans can't do anything. They look stupid for letting Georgia attack and give the Russians reason to come in there.
The Bush doctrine "we will talk tough, but we are not going to do anything" is obvious to everyone who has been fully conscious the past 7 years.
I think most Americans are a little worn out from all this war. Six years in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't think this conflict that has erupted is going to have the same impact it might of had in the past.
I am thinking the tinfoil hats are a LITTLE too tight...
