Is Obama a Failed President?

Posted: 02/ 3/2012 9:59 am

The outcome of the 2012 presidential election will depend upon voters' perception of the US economy and the jobs market. Republicans have labeled Obama a failed president, claiming he could have done more to create jobs. In the GOP response to Obama's State of the Union, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels said,

The president did not cause the economic and fiscal crises that continue in America tonight. But he was elected on a promise to fix them, and he cannot claim that the last three years have made things anything but worse.
The Great Recession began in 2007, although most Americans didn't notice until the fall of 2008. In his State of the Union address, President Obama recalled,
In the six months before I took office, we lost nearly 4 million jobs. And we lost another 4 million before our policies were in full effect." He continued: "Those are the facts. But so are these: In the last 22 months, businesses have created more than 3 million jobs. Last year, they created the most jobs since 2005. American manufacturers are hiring again, creating jobs for the first time since the late 1990s.
There's little dispute the economy is gaining strength. In the last quarter of 2011, the US Gross Domestic Product grew by an annualized rate of 2.8 percent. The good news is that we gained 200,000 jobs in December and the US has had 22 straight months of job increases. The bad news is that we are still down 6 million jobs from the peak pre-recession unemployment of 146 million. The unemployment rate has dipped to 8.5 percent and there are 13.1 million unemployed. (Another 8.1 million work part time and there are 945,000 discouraged workers.)

In his State of the Union address, President Obama spoke of an American economy "built to last" and suggested the US manufacturing sector will be reborn thereby creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs. That prediction is shared by the Boston Consulting Group in their recent report, "Made in America, Again."

Liberal economist Paul Krugman recently provided a more skeptical economic perspective:

...the state of the economy remains terrible. Three years after President Obama's inauguration and two and a half years since the official end of the recession, unemployment remains painfully high. But there are reasons to think that we're finally on the (slow) road to better times. And we wouldn't be on that road if Mr. Obama had given in to Republican demands that he slash spending, or the Federal Reserve had given in to Republican demands that it tighten money.
On the other hand, Republicans paint the economy black, the color of Governor Daniels' message. Ignoring the fact that employment fell under George Bush and then rose under Barack Obama, Daniels disparaged Obama's job-creation efforts: "The late Steve Jobs -- what a fitting name he had -- created more of them than all those stimulus dollars the president borrowed and blew." USA Today fact-checked Daniels remarks:
Jobs at or for Apple pale in comparison to estimates for jobs created by the stimulus legislation... Under the stimulus, meanwhile, up to 3.6 million more persons were working than would have been the case without the law, at its peak in the third quarter of 2010.
In their zeal to brand Obama a failed president, Republicans don't want to compare him to George W. Bush but rather to Ronald Reagan. James Pethokoukis, a columnist for the right-wing American Enterprise Institute, compared the Obama Recovery to the Reagan Recovery in the eighties and concluded, "The Obama Recovery stinks" because the economy isn't improving fast enough to make up for years of lost growth. Liberal columnist Joe Weisenthal responded, "The conditions behind the Great Recession were far worse than anything Reagan inherited, and Obama has pulled off a recovery with less of a sustained growth in Federal Government spending."

If this level of economic analysis makes your eyes glaze over and prompts you to reach for your favorite beverage, welcome to the American electorate. Nonetheless, you'll soon have to make a choice between Barack Obama and (probably) Mitt Romney. In the process you'll be bombarded by ads with widely differing assessments of the economy and what the president did or didn't do. Over and over, Republicans will call Obama a failed president.

When you encounter Republican propaganda, remember this: not only did Republican ideology cause the Great Recession, since then Republicans have done everything they could to thwart the US recovery. The GOP made the decision to block Obama on all fronts, betting that a failed economy would improve their chances in 2012. They haven't been part of the solution but rather contributors to the problem.

Given Republican treachery, it's a miracle the US economy shows any life. To the extent that it does, credit Barack Obama. He's not a failed president; he's succeeded despite perfidious Republican obstruction.

President Obama inherited a Texas size mess! It took former President Bush 8 year's of failed policies, unnecessary wars and poor leadership to dig this country into a deep, deep hole! This President has had less than 4 year's to repair the damage, it the script was flipped and you and I were the President could we have done any better especially with a hostile Republican controlled House & Senate fighting us every step of the way! Now some Americans want to put another Republican in office, that's your right to vote for whom you choose, but before you cast your ballad ask yourself these fundamental questions is your nominees policies that much different from former President Bush who got us into this mess to begin with? Has the Republican controlled House & Senate truly put forth personal differences with the President and the Democratics to resolve America's issues? Have the Democratic's & Republicans reached across party lines for what's best? Perhaps the President isn't the biggest issue here, perhaps it's the other elected officials we really should look at! Say Romney becomes President, if our elected official can't work together will things really improve?

Obama certainly does not rank as one of the best presidents, but he certainly is not one of the worst either. My disappointment with him is he does not seem to want to fight for what he promised and why I voted for him in 2008. However, the Republicant lie machine is certainly not the one to attack him. Their stated goal during the last three plus years was assuring their loonie fringe that Obama will be a one term president. Instead of voting for issues they earlier accepted, they now voted against the exact same ideas to attempt to drive the economy back into a situation similiar to the depression under Bush the Terrible. However, recent economic stats point to an upturn, much to the dislike of the Republicant lie machine. Looks like their best efforts to continue the Bush the Terrible depression has failed. I will not be voting in 2012 due to my dislike of Obama's unwillingness to fight the Republicant pigs and stop their efforts to destroy America. Obama has been a major disappointment to me for failing to engage these pigs and defend his positions that he campaigned on. But , I don't think there is any doubt he will win reelection and let's hope he learned his lesson and will engage these enemies of America much more during term number two.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Obama is dealing the only way he can with a Republican wall out to say no and only no. If you have kids and especially teenagers you will understand: when a teen says no only to say no and spite his parents the more the parent gets tough and tries to push harder or force the teen to comply, give in, understand or compromise, the more pig headed and obstinate the teen becomes. Obama gave away too much to the Repubs, but he got unemployment benefits extended, he got the first step in healthcare refom passed, etc etc by giving in. If he had pushed back and refused to accept their disgraceful "compromises" we all would have lost. He is the adult in the room. And hopefully by now the majority of Americans see what the Republican machine has been doing and they care more about destroying Obama than helping the American people or working towards an American recovery and his second term will see more goals attained. And check out the list of Obama achievements - you may be surprised at all that he has accomplished without shouting his successes from the rooftops.

I totally agree with you on the Republicant obstruction, as I mentioned in my opinion. Certainly he has improved the economy from the days of Bush the terrible and his depression. However, we are still wasting money on useless wars, and Obama has not been tough enough with the GOP. Does not mean he would win all the fights, but he could try and stand up for the people and against the anti-American policy of the GOP. Once in a while he does, but much more he caves and gets 10% while giving them 90%. I certainly see your point and I think we both agree that 4 years of Obama was better than 4 years of McCain would have been. But I wish Obama would stand his ground more and not give in to the other side and their disasterous ideas, the exact same ideas that got us into the depression 4 years ago.

The failures of Barry are many, and each one a bitter surprise to the solid welter of Americans who, for the first time since Clinton curb stomped Bob Dole, actually honestly elected a president. His betrayals are of the progressive policies and ideals upon which he campaigned, not their implementation.

All I remember is a President that was trying to fix the economy, a rise of some group called the Tea Party that was anti-Obama coming from the right, another group from the right called the birthers that claimed Obama wasn't born in the United States and shouldn't be the president, a Republican party that refused to work at all with the President even on extension of employment benefits and flatly said that their main focus was to oust the President not help the economy.

And for that I can't side with the Republican party this decade.

Personal opinion............

Failure, is when you try something and it doesn't work.

Under that criteria, the Republicans have NO grounds to call President Obama's administration a failure.

When you prevent an action, by any means possible, including the unprecedented use of the filibuster and secret holds, then that action did not "fail". It was never given a chance.

To blame someone for being ineffective, when you prevent nearly any measure they propose from even seeing the light of day, is hypocrisy of the highest order.

If anyone, or anything has "failed" it has been Congress, and the rules and systems that govern it's actions, the result of Republican obstructionism.

In 2008, too many people thought that we had elected Superman for President. However, having gone through that with Bill Clinton, I knew that the only thing we had gotten with Obama was a chance, just a chance, to keep from slipping into the abyss. Well, it's four years later, we've gotten a lot closer to that abyss than I would have liked, but we're still here. El Presidente has had a lot of uphill sledding during that time and, for what he has accomplished, I'm voting to give him another four years at the job...in other words, another chance.

This is only a short list of his accomplishments, but Republicans have a different set of measures. In fact, I believe they would call many of the items above to be examples of "failures."

Clearly, the Republicans have a different idea of a successful President. Like maybe Bush.

The state of the economy might be alright right now, but Obama has done very little to ensure that the same thing will not happen again going forward. The too big to fail banks have only gotten bigger, and there are still only minimal controls on the exotic securities that put us in this situation to begin with. Obama loving liberals need to open their eyes and see that he is not the progressive president that we all expected.

Nope - he's a center-left moderate Democrat who pushes an lot of progressive ideas and has to deal with headwinds unlike anyone before has had to face. You carping that he isn't the messiah can't erase the good he has done. Much remains to be done - but running him down for not being better is foolish. The reality of the situation is this: if we sit this out or allow the oppostion to win, we are GUARANTEED to lose the very things we have fought for over the past 70 years. Be critical - but be realistic. Work to push him to better things, but don't be a martyr and destroy any chance for progress.

Although, the President is not as progressive as I would like him to be. I know life for America would be worse under a McCain-Palin administration.
11:51 AM on 02/03/2012
Just speaking economically we have spent trillions in the name of stimulus and the economy is still terrible. On the one hand some will argue it would have been worse and I absolutely agree. Where I disagree is that it should have been allowed to get worse. The banks should have failed. We shouldn't have printed trillions.
It would have been terrible and I believe by now we would be climbing out of that and truly recovering and in a much better position.
Instead what we have done is created stagnation and we are going to experience something similar to Japan's lost decade and that's if the too big too fail banks, which are even bigger now, don't have more problems.
It's like a bandaid we should have ripped it off and rebuilt the banks smarter and smaller. Instead we have waded into an immoral swamp, rewarded criminals not changed the systematic problems, and piled a ton of debt on ourselves and our children bcuz we were to afraid to take our medicine.

01:55 PM on 02/03/2012
The Stimulus did not bail out the banks. TARP bailed out the banks...and most economists agree to a certain extent that it was a necessary move. The Stimulus is what we should not have permitted. Those funds went to select private enterprise. Not the American way.

The fact that a left wing blog is asking this question and feels the need to dispel it presupposes the answer.

That's the kind of logic that says the police should be allowed to search your house without warrant - after all, if you don't want them searching it, that's proof you have something to hide.
01:24 PM on 02/03/2012
The point remains. The left is compelled to defend this question because the vast majority of us out there already know the answer and they have to spin. I hope HuffPo keeps running Obama apologetics all year leading up to the election.

Yes. I think it is very telling that a left wing blog even has to ask the question. I bet they didn't have articles like this when Clinton was president.
11:31 AM on 02/03/2012
Obama lied from one end to another to get elected. The constitution gives military power to the president NOT congress. all the troops are not home as Obama promised many times and broke every one of those promises. And Obama's words " mandating health care is like mandating the homeless to buy a house, they don't buy one because they can't afford it" What do have?
And one of the worst bills he should have vetoed but did not was NDAA law, because he is the one that wanted the change to add American citizens not congress.
& unemployment that depends on your county 2010 my county was at 9,4% but 2011 it was 11.9% so I don't see it dropping. but that would be the result of the Bush administration.
Is Obama the worst president? no Bush still gets that title, but he is the second worse. He did not start this recession & he did not start the wars on a lie, he just continued them & added to them. maybe he is the worst, its a toss up.
I'm not voting for this liar again that is for sure. My vote goes to the only one that is completely different then all the others, the only one that has had his same views for 30+ years, which proves he does not lie. He will not co-promise (kiss up) to congress or the media. and the ONLY one that wants all the troops home Now. RON PAUL 2012

Hey Karen what about those WMD's in Iraq? Mmm...was not that one of the biggest lies in history. And look what it cost us.....yes Ron Paul has some good arguments. But would it really work? I agree very much that we should not police the world...and Obama is getting the troops home. Our credibility does rely on how we bring our troops home...and yes I want them home too to take care of domestic problems. But these things need to be done in a systematic and responsible way....too much heat on the kettle will cause it to boil over. And that's a bigger problem....
