Barack Obama's Slipping Presidency

What's Your Reaction:

Let's be blunt: President Barack Obama is struggling with a growing perception that he and his people are in over their heads.

It may be unfair, given opponents who decided on an unprecedented strategy of unyielding resistance. They have shamelessly sabotaged almost any progress or possible success for this administration.

But how do they get away with it? Shouldn't effective politicians be able to roll over those on the other side of the partisan blockades?

It may also be that the Obama communications team does a lousy job of, uh, communicating. The message about what accomplishments there have been has been drowned out by the loud braying of opportunistic politicians and commentators on the Right sidelines.

How is it that Press Secretary Robert Gibbs looks so much like he has his hands tied at the very same time he swings wildly at any questioner? That can't be possible. Can it?

But forget about surrogates -- isn't it ultimately the Chief Executive who should speak softly and carry a big fly swatter?

Unfortunately, this President only seems to have gotten the "speak softly" part down. It's hard to be "No Drama Obama" in such a theatre of the absurd.

No matter how many times his handlers feed pliant reporters some story about how he glowered behind closed doors or snapped "Plug the damned hole" in a snitty moment, it still seems like just a moment... that this is a man who doesn't instill fear when he needs to.

So every time he clenches his jaw and makes another "No More Mr. Nice Guy" speech, everyone yawns and says, "Yeah, whatever." As a result, in spite of the promise of "Change you can believe in," it looks like things are basically UNchanged.

The oil companies still are in control even when apparent sloppy greediness by one of them results in massive destruction. The bankers and investment chiefs whose inept avarice caused a worldwide economic collapse not only go unpunished, but they're getting huge raises while everyone else struggles to stay afloat.

The insurance companies used all the tried-and-true tricks to finesse attempts at meaningful health care reform, leaving a hollow shell.

Speaking of reform, those who came in promising a new way of life in Washington wallow around in the same-old-same-old with their Chicago-machine like patronage, where government jobs are offered as favors.

This list doesn't even address the grandiose declarations about more enlightened ways to handle terrorism and terrorists, and detainees and national security and civil liberties. Enemies still thumb their noses, as do the critics at home.

Here are some fair questions: In today's world of instant communication and blatant demagoguery, is an effective presidency even possible?

If so, is it premature to judge this one less than 17 months in? Perhaps. Except when will the impression of Barack Obama's audacious hopefulness be consumed by one of timid haplessness? And when will it have slipped too far in the public mind for this presidency to recover?

Yes, it is unfair, given the willingness of his opponents to dredge the bottom of the American landscape for crazy makers to rise up against our president. Yes, it is premature to judge at 17 months, but if you are going to, it is most unfair to leave out his many accomplishments, in spite of the opposition.

He played those fools to get health care through. That alone is the end of any discussion you base this biased article on, but the list is longer than any president of his tenure. Many, many things the average, ignorant American, with no clue of civics, even has an inkling of. This is the best president EVER.

Andrew Young was not kidding when he joked during the campaign, "Okay. Everything is broken. Give it to the black guy."

No human could deal with the list of world wide catastrophes President Obama has been dealt. But there is an endless stream of Hall of Fame pundits who can write from the sidelines, never have truly accomplished anything close to President Obama.

What a bunch of whiners. Obama is President and should start acting like one. If I had a dime for every time I heard anything Obama does is Bush's fault I would be wealthy beyond belief. Obama will succeed or fail based on his abilities. So far he seems like a typical Washington (or Chicago) politician. Change you can believe in. Yeah, right.

If one builder creates a faulty foundation that causes the whole building to collapse after another worker does the rest, do we blame the worker who was stuck with a lousy foundation?
If a Michelangelo is forced by those in charge to paint a plain wall instead of a Sistine Chapel ceiling, do we assume his skill level is limited to the monochromatic work done under those constraints?

If analogy won't serve: if a politician attempts to make positive changes, but is blocked by opponents whose sole purpose is to mindlessly reject those changes so they don't pass and he's left with a record that makes him look like a failure, what kind of whining idiots look only at the sabotaged results and believe and proclaim that he actually IS a failure?

Obama does not have an empathic temperment and he would be insincere to act anyway other than the way he is now. The right wing mounted a systematic campaign to delegitimize his presidency from the word go and instead of taking them on by fighting for ordinary people he appointed some of the worst wall street types to the most important economic positions in his administration. Instead of fighting back against Cheny's attacks he appointed Kagan who upheld the worst abuses of the Bush-Cheney Junta and followed the same foreign policy including embracing their stupid wars. Instead of fighting for a public option in health care he settled for a pro-industry bill and on the environment he pander to Palin and the extremists who were screaming drill baby drill. The right wing has been after him from day one but his response has not been very encouraging.

Obama's slipping presidency. Seriously? I don't believe what our so called press do today. How is his presidency slipping? He has a 4yr contract with the American people. His contract is not up until 1/20/12. His time in office thus far, 16 months and a few days. He has tried and worked his butt off. But all we hear from the press, not what his ADM is telling us but pundits, as yourself, telling us daily how Obama needs to emote more. How he needs to go down to LA and vacation there. Irrespective of how many Liberal media may feel about the environment, I thought their job was to report the news not make news. The White House web site have detailed everything the Obama ADM have been doing from day one but Lame lazy media refuse to report what they have done. They would rather find failures and shove a Carville and his wife Mary to our faces. Facts be darned. Obama should stop everything, part of his ceremonial duties because of the Gulf oil gush. Was that the way it was demanded of Carter in 1979, Gulf gush or Nixon in 1969 Ca gush? How about Regan in 1989 Exxon Valdez? What has changed? The gush is part regulatory problem, part greed of BP and part inadequate laws and enforcement. Has any in the press truly do an assessment of Gulf states politicians and their voting records? Has any one asked for accountability? Nope.

Mr. Franken, you're 1000000% proved your thesis. Just for starters, Bush2 was appointed. The press gave him a pass. We don't want to derail his presidency, hands off attitude. Gore was not put on TV/Cable, print or radio shows hounding Bush. 8/6/2001, OBL determined to strike US, Bush did nothing. 9/11 happened, Dems say, OK America is attacked, Bush, we are with you. What happened? 2 wars later. several tax cuts to the rich, no child left behind, PartD for prescription for seniors, etc. Until Katrina in 8/29/05. Before Mr. Obama was inaugurated, he was being judged by a whole different standard. 9 or 10 days after inaugural, Cheney was already calling Obama naive, unprepared and unable to defend this nation. From day one, the press in this nation have collectively decided that Mr. Obama was to be judged from a 360 degree lens. Everything he does or not is scrutinized at a level unheard of. Why? This oil gush off the Gulf of Mexico, one reading the prints and watching TV/Cable and listening to the radio would come away thinking that this the 1st oil gush from the Gulf. It is not, in 1979, 200 ft deep. It took 10 months before it was capped. This is the 9 or 10 Obama's Katrina. Obama is quick to be impugned with failures of past president's. Now is it the Iranian hostage, is Obama JCarter. MSM is the problem. Live with it.

President Obama is constantly challenged by the media, pundits and citizens for not being a mean and nasty person, that is not his way. Does acting a fool actually get things done better or quicker? No, it wouldn't!
10:47 AM on 06/03/2010
- they're minute by minute monitoring and dogging out of this president ain't making him "emote" enough for them - it's really comical -
09:55 AM on 06/03/2010
It's not that they are "in over their heads", its the decisions they have been making and the ones made were not the only ones btw. It is the fact that Obama has gone against almost everything he ran on and might I add, was elected for.

The "once in a lifetime" opportunity for real health care reform squandered and his choosing the likes of Geitner, Summers, Bernake & Co. and being in bed with Goldman Sachs, etc. are the problems. "Pretty talk" only takes you so far.

For the record, I was a big Obama supporter.

NO YOU WERE NOT A SUPPORTER!! IF YOU REALLY SUPPORTED HIM YOU WOULD BE OUT AND ABOUT HELPING HIM CHANGE THIS COUNTRY.....NOT LOOKING TO ONE PERSON TO DO IT ALL ALONE.....

The real problem is that Obama doesn't react in a way commensurate with the problems at hand. Given the environmental disaster of oil; he should use WWII type gas rationing, sell war on oil bonds, put on price controls and start some massive Manhattan style projects to get us off oil. Our spoiled brat child Israel gets away with murder including apparently one of our own citizens and they don't even get sent to bed without their supper. His natural response to any problem is to call a college seminar. This won't work! The problems are only going to get worse and come at us faster given the economic and environmental crisis the world is in and these are really the same problem by the way. Where is Harry Truman or Teddy Roosevelt now that we need them? I gave him my vote and money last time but next time he will need to go to his buddy Yahu.

" I live on in an apartment on the 99th floor of my block" Mick Jagger Get off of my Cloud. That's where Obama looks like. Out to freakin lunch. He can;t even get a double sexual entendre to work. "What man goes to work before his little girl asks him " Daddy did you plug that hole yet?"
