81 Years Old & the Essence of Awesomeness

Posted: 01/26/2012 11:18 am

My mother has been touted for her amazing energy, eagerness to learn, and positive thinking. Aka "Ever-Ready Betty," she inspires everyone who meets her with a sunny outlook... and how about that style? She'll coordinate mink and neon plastic accessories and look fantastic. She can also pull off wearing heirloom baubles with blue jeans and snappy flats. Listen up, folks, this gal -- who was born 1/1/31 -- knows the ropes.

"You just have to look in your closet and mix it all around," she said.

After an overnighter in NYC, my mother mentioned that she had on "good walking shoes," but after walking from Lincoln Center to the Museum of Natural History"... (my) back hurt a little bit."

My sister, who lives in Princeton, said that she had recently seen a 94-year old woman sitting on her walker in the midst of an open field on campus. Thinking she might need assistance, my sister went up to her and asked if she was okay, and whether she needed anything.

"Oh, no, I'm fine," the elder woman responded. "I'm just taking a break from walking and enjoying the day."

Don't you love it?

I mentioned this anecdote to my mother and said that maybe a walker would be helpful when she's in the city. Without skipping a beat, and showing no vanity, she replied," That's a great idea. My friend has an extra one. I'll try it. Will make getting around easier. Plus, there's an upcoming senior trip to Central Park in the spring. They said the tour takes breaks. If I have the walker, I'll be fine."

Last January, my siblings and I hosted an 80th birthday tea party for Mom. Many of her friends range from lower-80s to mid-90s. They are gorgeous women, full of life, fashionable, connected and Fun (note the capital "F"). When I met one of them, she said, "Thank goodness December is over. So many parties!"

The remarkable thing is that my mother had a brain tumor 36 years ago. Along with deafness in one ear, she was left with partial paralysis in her right side that left it difficult for her to walk, blink and swallow. It took years to get back on the other side of life, but with determination and strong will she regained her tenacity. Her only-child sassiness remained intact throughout.

Mom awakens every single day grateful to be alive. Every sunrise and every sunset is a blessing to her. She shares her optimistic glow with everyone she meets -- from the doorman to the Governor. With punch and panache, Mom inspires us all. She is a lesson in how to live your life to the max. At full-speed. Even if it's with a walker to get from West 65th Street to the museum on West 79th.

And knowing Mom, she'll even tie a ribbon on the handle of that new walker so that it coordinates with her outfit. In her ever-growing book of mantras, "Why take a cab when you can make tracks with a walker?"

What a great story! Im only 22 but I have a grandmother who is 85 years old and she shows no sign of stopping. She is very active for her age. She works running her own antique and floral store, and in the winter drives down to FL (by herself) to be with other family memebers and friends and works at subway to just keep herself busy. Which this summer Im excited to be flying down and then driving home with her. She loves to interact with people. Its her main joy in life. I do belive that the more the elderly keep active and have a good social life the better and longer there life will be. I am a college student taking a class on aging and its amazing what I am learning, and I can apply all of that to help my grandmother and parents, along with the applying it to working with the elderly which is what I am going to school for. I just hope when I get to be that age im looking half as good and as active as my grandmother and Betty!

How awe-inspiring! I have always said that age is irrelevant. I am a 65-year old Freshman and intend to keep right on going to school; I may be 90 when I get my Master's, but am planning on being 90 anyway!

I had an amazing teacher; she died at 97, and was still in plays;; in one dressed up like Willie Nelson; she wore sweat shirts and scrunchies and hoop earrings and I dedicated my book (Sanctuary of the Soul) to her memory.

We all get to decide how we will "be"...your mom has chosen joie de vivre.....living life to the fullest! Love and hugs to her! Alice (www.soulpoetry.org)

Ever Ready Betty is indeed an inspiration. Live life to the fullest because there are no mulligans. Ever Ready Betty needs to meet Never Slow Down Jo. (my mom) 81 and still works shampooing hair in a hair salon three days a week. The job slows her down though because it interferes with her trips to Atlantic City and the bingo hall.

Mcart, Never Slo Down Jo sounds like a kick. I love her spirit. Go N.S.D.J.!

Thanks so much for your uplifting note.

How lovely! My mother, who just died this past year at the age of 96, still insisted on wearing bling, making sure her hair was nicely combed, and her clothes coordinated to the very end. But it was her attitude towards life that was inspiring. She lived her last few years in a long term care home but every time an aide gave her help of any kind, it was "thank you, sweetie." She had a knack for letting others know she was appreciated. It's the little things that count, huh?

Diana, please accept my most sincere sympathy for the passing of your mother. She sounds like she was an amazing person with a wonderful countenance and lots of style.

Indeed, it's the little things that count. Bling can't hurt.

Thanks, Bonnie.

That "punch and panache" is something we should all model, at any age. I once had the opportunity to work with an artist who drove his own version of a sports car – a walker emblazoned with a paper cut-out of a Mercedes Benz. Something tells me they would have gotten along swimmingly.

Love it.

The funny thing is that when I told my mother this story was running, she said, "I can't read it now! I'm in the ICU." Every week she volunteers in the ICU unit at the local hospital. She's the perfect front desk person to welcome family/friends visiting patients.

Thanks, good read, but I better practice wearing ribbons now! (A terrible paraphase of the Jenny Poem)

Never too early to don ribbons.

This is a wonderful post, and I am fortunate to also have such an inspiration in my mom of 82. She is constantly busy and travels every year. She even climbed the pyramids at Machu Picchu a little over a year ago, and toured Vietnam and Cambodia. I pray that I can have the life she has and be half the woman she is.

Ann, your mother is amazing. Machu PIcchu at 82? Love it. How incredibly inspiring.
