The F Word

Posted: 10/04/11 01:05 AM ET

I've been known to drop the occasional expletive, but the most offensive F word to me is not the one that goes f***. It's F***** -- the famine happening in Somalia.

Drought, violence and political instability have invited in the grim reaper on a scale we have not seen in 20 years... more than 30,000 children have died in just three months. The pictures from Dadaab look like a nightmare from centuries past. Yet, this is the 21st century and these pictures are real and, on the whole, unseen. The food crisis in the Horn of Africa is nothing short of a humanitarian catastrophe, but it is getting less attention than the latest Hollywood break-ups and make-ups.

ONE's new film The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity isn't a typical emotional emergency appeal. It's about focusing the media spotlight on the tragedy unfolding. It's about building political support in the US and around the world for interventions that will stop the suffering today and break the cycle of famine in the future. Most of all, it's about taking action -- because famine is man-made.

Of course it's complex, and solutions are difficult -- especially in Somalia where there has not been a formal government for 20 years. But that is not an excuse for the world to look the other way. Most of us (thankfully) have no experience of starvation, but we do know what it's like to lose someone you love. Each of those 30,000 children was someone's daughter or son, someone's sister or brother. If you look at reports from the Horn, there are stories of mothers having to decide which child to feed and which to let die; women leaving their children's bodies on the side of the road as they walk for weeks in search of food and water for those still fighting for life.

History shows there are ways to prevent drought from becoming famine, even though it's complicated. So check out the film and sign ONE's petition to world leaders calling on them to live up to promises already made to invest in things proven to work... early warning systems... irrigation... drought resistant seeds... and of course, peace and security. At ONE.org there's more explanation and information. And while ONE doesn't solicit funding, if you want to give money, you can find links to other organizations providing emergency assistance in the Horn who need all the support they can get.

The world is overpopulated and we still don't get it. You can bash Bono if it makes you feel better but at least he acts like he really cares regardless on how much money he makes or taxes he may avoid. I praise him for bringing awareness to countries such as this and seems very geniune and caring. More celebrities should help raise attention. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn't but at least he is trying.

Wow.. I just clicked on the "favorites" tab and find myself ashamed to be a fellow citizen of many of those who commented (and agreed with the comments). The cold callousness is hard to fathom. I don't know how anyone can read about " mothers having to decide which child to feed and which to let die; women leaving their children's bodies on the side of the road as they walk for weeks in search of food and water for those still fighting for life" and have no desire to help beyond suggesting that they need to stop "popping them out". Suggesting that we fix our 1st world "problems" here before helping those dying of starvation. I don't get it. They're probably the same people who think that the govt. should fund abortions for those "poor" women who.. surprise!.. seem to have the same exact problem with controlling their sexual activity.

Yes.. see? It's clearly more important to make sure the poor can buy name brand groceries here in our 1st world country before helping fellow human beings who are dying and watching their loved ones die because they have NO FOOD AT ALL. Ahhh.. this liberal "logic" is so "wise"!

While we're at it, let's do something about incest. OK then, how about getting some mandatory birth control there.

Bono, move to Africa and pay some taxes there. Take Nancy Pelosi with you. So embarrassed that I used to worship you up until you "popped out/sold out" with Achtung Baby.

Sending food to that area of the world is just feeding the wars. If the fighters have to spend time growing food, there would be less killing. Lets face it, it is more fun to fight for a cause than plow a field and have the fighter steal the crop.

Adding more food won't help this man made problem.

Bono..I hopped you would write at least a line about the South African Government denying Dalia Lama a visa to attend the 80th birthday of Desmond Tutu. That is the biggest threat of democracy in Africa and the increased Chinese political influence. IMO you are just the usual MSM character.

What a tragedy! The DL can't visit South Africa. To hell with those dying and starving children in NORTHWEST Africa -- which has absolutely nothing to do with S Africa -- the DL is denied a visit to S Africa.

Why don't you organize a benefit concert in Israel. Support for Israel shows support for real Africa. Until real Africa can throw off the chains of its 1400 year enslavement to Arabic Rule, nothing will be accomplished.

Bono alone has an estimated $200 to $300 Million. Imagine how much good you could do with that much money. Tomorrow you could convert all your assets into money donate them to a charity of your choosing or make one of your own. George Clooney has about $200 Million himself so if they got together that's half a billion right there. Throw in a few others.

You can't ask others to give what little they have when you have so much to give and refuse to. Heck form a PAC to influence the Presidential elections and Congressional races in the US.

What are you willing to give up to accomplish your goal?

U2 moved their entire company out of Ireland! Ireland started taxing artists because they are so broke.

So now he makes gobs more in Holland!

Way to help his own people out. Took jobs and taxes that they desperately need.

I won't listen to another word he says and will never support any U2 music or concerts anymore.

I'm ashamed they are Irish!

the horn of africa is its own problem, they have a government there, if the government and people are not wise enough not to wage wars whether, religious or territorial, they have made their own problems, let them see to it...you are welcome to donate, but with the UN saying (as in most cases), food is being sold, stolen or the people cant get the food because of rebels, soldiers.. is it doing any good? until a country and its people decide they want peace, famine is just a fellow traveller of war/unrest.

The reality of the whole matter is that one can only do so much for people who are incapable of creating even a small amount of stability for themselves. The single most important need over there is heads of states that care for their own people. They were never given the luxury or the opportunity to have that. Their own has always been their worst enemy. Just helping them with food is not enough. They also need to change lot of other things to be able to help themselves before the other nations become insensitive to their decades old plight.

Hunger, famine, malnutrition......., there is no excuse for allowing any people to go hungry. America is "the breadbasket of the world", but, we are not allowed to grow the most important food source in the entire world. In fact, our government pays farmers 'not' to farm on about 6% of existing farmland, and there is nearly 1/2 a billion acres lying fallow, or unused, where this one particular crop would grow quite well, and could easily produce enough to prevent malnutrition throughout the world. The reason this food source is not legal to grow, is because nearly 80 years ago, certain industries in the nation lobbied the government, paid bribes to officials, and spread propaganda and lies about this food source, to avoid competition for their particular industries. It is monopolistic horse-hooie that outlawed the most useful plant in the world. And we claim to have a 'free' market. That's BS!
What is really bad, is that this same source of food, was grown extensively, by many of our founding fathers, who encouraged all farmers to grow it. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights was written on paper made from the same plant.
Yes, I'm talking about the sister-plant to marijuana...., Hemp. {which will not get people high.}
A handful of hempseeds, once a day, provides all the necessary nutrients for any adult to sustain themselves. It is even more nutritious than soy because it digests easier.
For more information, please read the following link. You might be amazed at what this miracle plant is capable of, and we can't grow it, because of lies spread by Big oil, petrol-chemical companies, the timber industry and cotton farmers, and many other related industries.
Educating the public is the key to allow us to produce the most nutritious food source in the world.
No one should be going hungry....,

http://www.hemphasis.net/Nutrition/nutrition.htm

By the way..., I been a fan of U2 since 1980......., best music in the world , imo......,

Wonderful link. Our government's efforts to eradicate hemp are so counterproductive and shortsighted.

Awesome comment,

People can also look up Gruel which, in its original form, was made with Marijuana seeds. The breakfast of champions for over a thousand years.
It's also the fastest growing plant in the first 90 days of growth putting down a 3 foot tap root. So any land that has suffered from erosion and mudslides (say after a forest fire) would be much better with a growth of Marijuana on hillsides than the current use of Rye grass.
