The performances were not the highlight of the latest episode of "Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars." Instead, it was judge Carrie Ann Inaba's literal fall for Gilles Marini's rumba. But was it worthy of such an over-the-top reaction?
Marini was one half of only four couples who performed during Night 1, thanks to the final presidential debate. The other four danced together in a group routine. "DWTS" is mixing things up with two nights of performances from the couples and two exciting free style group numbers. Tomorrow night, the couples will switch things around, giving each contestant the chance to show off their moves.
Not only does this week give us the chance to see some of our favorite all-stars dancing together, but it's also guilty pleasure week! Each contestant chose their own guilty pleasure song for their routine, and in case you were wondering, "Call Me Maybe" got some recognition. And so did Barry Manilow. So who were the stars of the evening? And who didn't quite make the cut? Find out below.
THE DANCES OF THE NIGHT:
Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd: Gilles and Peta delivered a sexy rumba set to the obvious guilty pleasure, "I Will Always Love You" and the couple brought down the house. "Let the babymaking begin!" Carrie Ann declared, before she promptly fell out of her chair. We assume that means she liked it. Score: 29.5
Free Style Number: Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough, Sabrina Bryant and Louis Van Amstel, Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff, and Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani grouped up tonight to choreograph an exciting and acrobatic routine set to the ultimate guilty pleasure song of the year "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen. Inspired by cheerleaders, the routine was jam packed with lifts and tricks so difficult, Melissa landed in the hospital with a head injury. Luckily, she pulled through and was able to perform with the group. With four of the strongest contestants, it was no surprise when Bruno said, "It was almost impossible to distinguish the celebrities and the professionals." Score: 29.5
THE STANDOUTS:
Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke: Emmitt may be macho on the field, but when it comes to his taste in music, he's all about Barry Manilow. He selected "Copacabana" for his suave samba with Cheryl (complete with a satin red suit). Emmitt definitely made Barry proud, and according to Carrie Ann, Emmit has the "samba swagger." Score: 29
THE GOOD:
Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy: After landing in the bottom two last week, Kirstie was desperate to prove that she can keep up with the other contestants. She decided to tackle a quickstep set to "Mrs. Robinson" and -- minus a quick breakdown in rehearsal -- she pulled it off! All of the judges agreed that it was her best dance yet, and much to Kirstie's delight, Carrie Ann informed her that her "carriage was lifted." We hope this means at least one more week for Kirstie! Score: 25.5
THE MEDIOCRE:
Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy: When it comes to Kelly and Val, it's hard to concentrate on anything other than their awkward love confessions. Typically, their chemistry leads to a smokin' routine, but this week's samba fell a little flat. Len thought there was too much gyrating (not suprising considering Val choreographs the routine) and Carrie Ann felt that Kelly was uncertain. Still, Bruno thought that Kelly was a "tasty tease," whatever that might mean. Score: 24.5
