In July, Chicago becomes pretty festive as a result of the weather and the huge number of visitors. Since Millennium Park was built it has become a veritable playground. And as I walked down to Roosevelt University for an audition recently it was driven home very strongly. The place is overrun with joyful people of all ages and sizes!

The Crown Fountain was the noisiest part of the playground with hundreds of children happily splashing. The Pritzker Pavilion had a rehearsal in progress for the Grant Park Festival concert tomorrow evening, and the new Modern Wing, the latest major success for the Art Institute, was heaving with visitors approaching it over Renzo Piano's elegant Nichols bridge.

Meanwhile, for the rest of the day I was closeted in our air-conditioned offices as my colleagues wrestled with the usual intractable problems of running an opera company. But it is good to get on with this quietly at this time of year without the distraction and inconvenience of production and performances!
