Field of Tears

Oh dear -- we were booted out in the first round from the great Olympic election. And on my way to the Lyric's dress rehearsal Friday morning I saw at first hand the misery and tears at this turn of events. Apparently sane people were as distraught as if it had been a ... well I won't put ideas into anyone's head. It was nevertheless perhaps a disproportionate reaction. And the poor journalists, be they of the TV or print variety, had a different story to tell from the one they were for some reason expecting. And the whole event in Daley Plaza presumably fizzled out. Below you see what was left at 11:45 a.m. -- a sort of post-mortem mood I thought.

I actually think that the Olympic Games in Chicago would have been a wonderful thing -- and given the need for employment for so many people it would have been a great stimulus to our economy. But it will be great for the Brazilians. We should be happy for them. And I am! That is not being unpatriotic is it?
