Obama vs. The Politics of Fear

Posted: 02/26/2012 5:43 pm

Unless there's a radical change this month, President Obama's isn't going to be running against either Romney or Santorum. While one of them will win the Republican nomination, neither will actually be competing for the presidency.

That's because as things stand today, Obama's not running against the Republican Party. He's running against our fears, and the Republican Party has just been going along for the ride.

What do the Republican candidates actually stand for? Do you know? I don't. I've heard lots of talk about wanting to cut the deficit -- by reducing taxes -- but that's not a rational position. It's a ball of fear wrapped in denial. I do know that they care about America, religion, free markets and strong families. But I have yet to hear a real vision for the future.

In contrast, what are they against? That's a much easier list. They're against Obama. They're against abortion and gay marriage. They're against the Detroit Bailout. They're against illegal immigration. They're against Iran. They're against universal health care. They're against the deficit. They're against requiring Catholic hospitals to provide birth control to their employees.

And they're against each other.

Over the past four years, the Republican party has turned into The Party of No. Not because they're bad people, or because they want bad things. The problem isn't one of character, values, or beliefs.

The problem is that they've succumbed to The Politics of Fear. They've gotten trapped in a race to the bottom, to see who can use the lowest emotions to run for the highest offices.

And it's eating them alive.

As Michael Medved reminds us, over the last 80 years, voters have consistently chosen the more positive candidate for president. While anger and insecurity can fuel a short term backlash, what people really crave is leadership, not pandering. And leaders -- true leaders -- make our fears better rather than worse.

"The most triumphant and popular presidents of the modern era -- Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton -- all connected with the public through their genial personalities and kindly, positive presentations. On the other side, most of the conspicuous losers -- such as Tom Dewey in '44 and '48, Michael Dukakis in '88, Bob Dole in '96, John Kerry in 2004 -- came across as gloomy, dour and negative."

As an Obama supporter, I confess to feeling some guilty pleasure as I've watched the Party of No's desperate quest to find someone who's Not-Obama -- and who's also Not-Romney, Not-Santorum, and Not-Crazy. But, as Thomas Friedman points out, our country needs two healthy parties to address the challenges we face.

"What we definitely and urgently need is a second party -- a coherent Republican opposition that is offering constructive conservative proposals on the key issues and is ready for strategic compromises to advance its interests and those of the country. Without that, the best of the Democrats -- who have been willing to compromise -- have no partners and the worst have a free pass for their own magical thinking."

In order to move forward as a country, we need both sides to let go of the Politics of Fear.

How do we do this? The first step is to name the beast for what it is. People already know that fear is a sign of weakness. It only holds sway so long as it can masquerade as either anger or righteousness. But these are both just ways of covering up our fears.

A schoolyard bully is scared, not strong. If you stand up to his threats and unmask his insecurities, he may receive compassion or pity, but not respect.

Remember when the GOP freshman congressmen threatened to destroy America's credit rating if they didn't get their way on the budget? They may have won the battle, but they had to resort to hostage taking -- the tactics of terrorists -- in order to do so.

The Catholic bishops' anger over contraception? 98 percent of their female members already disregard this teaching. I can see how that would upset them, but it doesn't make their aggravations sound any less insecure.

When Santorum compared homosexuality to having sex with dogs? This may play well with some fundamentalists, but it certainly doesn't make him seem presidential.

Each time Romney carpet bombs an opponent, his own ratings decline. Destroying his opponents may win him the nomination, but beware -- the Politics of Fear has a way of eating its own.

What do the Republican candidates actually stand for? The 1%, Big Oil, War. Tax Cuts for the 1%.. Monitoring my bedroom and what I do in it, Spend, Spend, Spend when they're in control like drunken sailors and then claim well we don't know where the money went...Wiping out the Middle Class, They stand tall and proud for inequality. ;-)

Right on, Brian. The greatest challenge to America today isn't some external treat, but to succumbing to the lower level consciousness of fear. Politicians, media, advertising have spent millions of dollars on how to tap into our basic level fears. This is not true leadership. It is manipulation, or leading by saying what we fear to hear. The sky has been falling for as long as people choose to hear that message.

Nearly 70 years ago Winston Churchill said, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." Maybe it is time that we reawaken to that message.

Brian, your message is filled with truth. Fear dissolves in the face of the truth. You are a true leader in the rising consciousness of the planet. Speak your truth, we are listening.
Peace,
Bill

Obama is running against his own failures, lies and corruption. The republicans are clearly trying to lose the election because they love Obama, he's to the right of Cheney, he only has Bush's agenda in mind for everything. Despite what he says, Obama does what any good Republican would do, cut taxes, make war, destroy the Bill of Rights, help corporations with welfare from our tax dollars, destroy Social Security and Medicare. Have his justice department making money by running guns and dope. Why would they want anyone else?

Let me see if I understand. Our banks are too big to fail. Our wealthy
are too privileged to tax. Our treasury is too depleted to function. Our
schools are too poor to educate. Our businesses are too fragile to to
regulate. Our environment is too costly to protect. Our congress is too
polarized to to govern. Our politicians are too self serving to lead.

The GOP ran on fear for 8 years. They could say a sentence without 9/11 being in it. The fear mongers have caused the most restrictive society in U.S. history. President Obama has been a breath of fresh air in not continuing the rhetoric of fear, but like all presidents before him is not going to willingly relinquish the extended powers granted to him by Congress.

If you dont pass this or that we go down faster and futher. We must do this or that or we will get in bigger trouble. so does that sound familar or do you have blinders on?

Actually the politics of FEAR started long before that. Don't you remember how GW Bush kept telling us that if he didn't get relected that we would get HIT again? How else could a President that had done such a terrible job win a second term? If he didn't have blinders on we wouldn't have gotten hit on 9/11. There is a difference between fear and information, and the fact is that if the auto industry was allowed to fail we would have been in a full blown depression. The economy is coming back slowly due in large part to the fact that most American companies are not hiring Americans, and in many cases are not paying income taxes in the US. Corporate tax income is at an all time low yet they keep whining about high tax "rates" not actual taxes paid.

You did not read about after the uss cole was blow up that clinton had a oppertunity to get osma ben and didnt do it. he was in a country that had him too. as for bush at least he kept his promise we didnot get hit again did we? by the way most ressions are over in 6 to 18 months if left alone; this time we had a complicit pres and fed chair to do a very bad job and gain control of private companys and give to unions!

Poor Ron Paul tried to tone down the near hysterical paranoic rhetoric regarding the threat of Iran. He directly found himself labeled by the three neocon stooges, Mitt, Rick, and Newt, as being "unrealistic". These birds and their neocon sponsors just love our nation to continue to fight endless and unconstitutional proxy wars for Israel -- and so need a "Policy of Fear" (which is, as we are told, the "Cost of Freedom"). Ah, yes, On to Iran!

Dear Thomas,

To clear up the author's confusion, Republicans stand for a reduction in spending, a reduction in taxation, reduction in government regulation, and reformation of entitlements before the country goes bankrupt. Seems to me those are fairly simple and straightforward goals.

They stand for voter suppression.
Suppression of women and womens rights.
Larger government to achieve their social agenda on abortion.
Their budgets will increase the deficit by 2 to 7 Trillion.

Keep drinking the kool aid. They call it entitlements, but, Americans have paid into SS for years and the Republicans are enabling the Health Care Industry to overcharge.

That information is straightforward, yours is not.

"If you want this country to do everything in its power
to protect you … vote Republican."
-George W. Bush-

.

"America and Islam are not exclusive
and need not be in competition.
Instead, they overlap,
and share common principles
of justice and progress, tolerance
and the dignity of all human beings."
-Barack Obama-

.
Since 1980, there have been 91 breaches of security
at the White House.
.
Well, 92 if you count George Bush.

Do those "common principles" include Jihad, total repression of women and minorities, and a religious absolutism reminiscent of the 12th century?

The US should not act as the world’s policemen
for many good reasons:

* Enormous spending

* Depleting resources

* Loss of American life

* Creating global enemies

and “Who will guard the guards?

You've just described Rick Santorum's agenda to a T.
09:13 AM on 02/27/2012
Whoops. Ya got it a little backwards, Obama IS the campaign of fear. Deviding the classes, threaten to hold federal checks to our own, spending into oblivion, suing states, protecting corrupt federal officials and appointees, spreading propoganda by proxy and first hand about GOP and only news media that allows both sides to be reported. (Fox, like ya didn't know) He works in lying better than Michaelangelo worked in marble. Fear?...just watch the closer the election gets he'll tell you how terrible it could be without him. Then if he does pull it off your fears will come true ten-fold as you will have okay'd a runaway train of this nations detruction.

Dividing the classes?????? How about we the people finally opening our eyes to the already well established lines between the classes that the Republicans promote.
