When the telephone rings in the wee hours of the morning, there is a near certain belief it might be an emergency. In Anita Hill's case, however, the call left on an office voicemail system during witching hours was a plea from the begrudged wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas requesting a 20-year overdue apology on his behalf.

While many are at a loss as to why the call came seemingly out of the blue, there's only one explanation for such a request two decades later -- sneaky politics in a heated midterm election cycle. Mrs. Thomas' call was much less about a desire for reconciliation and more about creating a platform for her to criticize the Obama administration and whip up support for the Tea Party in the run up to elections.

Since her unusual request, Virginia Thomas has been the toast of the town, appearing on talk and radio shows across the country. Brilliant, Tea Party strategists, checkmate. Anita Hill, the pawn in all of this, on the other hand, must be at a loss in terms of how to reject a third-party request for an apology without drudging up the Supreme Court Justice hearings that not only changed her life forever, but raised significant questions about race, gender and meritocracy in our country.

The hearings divided entire communities along ideological, racial and gender lines. It was a very difficult moment in our country's history around race relations and the meaning of progress. Virginia Thomas is trying to go there again. She wants to remind us that racial tension and divisions still exist.

Ms. Thomas wants the midterm elections to be a referendum on the Obama administration and, more importantly, Barack Obama himself and the discomfort that our nation still has around race and power.

It is true, midterm elections are usually a progress report on how Americans feel about the state of country. If I were issuing a grade to the administration today, I'd give it a C+, mainly because there is still so much work to be done and we have yet to experience the full benefit of policies such as healthcare reform and the stimulus package.

In November, there will be gains and losses on both sides and a few surprises along the way, I suspect. This is politics as usual -- we expect a certain amount of political theater.

In Ms. Thomas' case, the call from an overzealous wife to a woman who allegedly wronged her husband nearly two decades, seems more sinister than entertaining. I also question the judgment of a woman who would throw her own husband under the bus for political gain.

Somehow conflicts between Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston continue to sell, but the request from Virginia Thomas for an apology is something we shouldn't buy. The politics that Ms. Thomas is peddling is neither innocent nor sincere.

I just do not see how this would help her and the TBP politically. why would she use god and her faith to set a political trap. Maybe, Justice Thomas asked his wife to call Hill to get her to recant her charges so he run for political office. This phone call is very odd.

Why would he want to run for public office when he can cause so much more trouble in his lifetime job now?

Thomas could be loyal to her party, or to her husband who now serves in esteemed position many of us felt he should not have been give for the reasons Professor Hill made abundantly clear in her testimony at his nomination. She could not do both, and she seems to have failed at the other as well. One suspects her state of mind at the hour she called.

Her attempt to intimidate the Professor to "apologize" is the voice of a person who finds herself in the position of believing she can intimidate another to do what they ask, even when it is irrational to believe they would. Professor Hill called Thomas' bluff, as did Angela Wright later in the week.

Thomas' probably wishes now she had not opened the lid of this "box" she found in her husband's drawer of personal relationships. My guess is that her husband wishes that even more!

Well its backfiring because Thomas's former girlfriend is basically corroborating similar things bout Judge Thomas. So she is going to end up regretting this move of hers. Instant Karma!

It would be great if this rose to the level of a GOTV move for women. :) With a couple of weeks to go, it will no doubt be forgotten. I think Ms. Thomas overestimates her and her hubby's role in the mid-terms for most 'folks.' This little trick just generally reminds us of one Supreme Court 'justice' we'd rather forget. She came across like a ditz at the hearings and again with this. Empty, but disgusting tactic.

I have to wonder if she made the call to shift attention away from the money her organization is receiving in donations from unnamed sources.

And no one does buy it . I think it was a huge mistake on her part . Her husband may be a hero of the right wing , but he is no hero of anyone else in America , and neither is she . I , for one , am delighted she opened her mouth and is giving other women the opportunity to come forward and reveal more dirt about Justice Thomas . If I was Anita Hill , I would send her a thank you note for giving Anita another opportunity to talk about the harrassment she suffered . Clarence Thomas is one of the more reprehensible men in public life and I have been sadly disappointed that more focus has not been placed on this man over the years .

But there are those who will "buy it" - and the money will come rolling in for her political cause. I lost all respect for the supreme court when Thomas was seated and haven't changed my mind since then. It has become nothing more than a political group with its own agenda rather than a neutral, unbiased court of law.

This action by the wife of a sitting justice is despicable - of course, that can also be said of the actions of her husband.

Single, working women in Washington have always been aware of the behavior of men in various walks of Washington life from Senators to journalists to civil servants. They have also always shared this information with each other and, on rare occasion, more publicly.

Thomas faced an internal investigation back in his OEO days based on complaints of sexual harrassment by women in his office. The knowledge of his pattern of conduct was well known in certain circles even at the time of his confirmation hearings.

I don't know McEwen personally but I have known of her reputation from colleagues who knew her very well. She enjoyed an excellent reputation as an attorney and I didn't know anyone who doubted her word. I'm curious as to whether Thomas was an equal opportunity harrasser or if he felt he could more easily get away with his crude behavior with minority women.

Except for those who do not want to face the truth like Virginia Thomas, Clarence Thomas' reputation long preceded his rise to public prominence.

If Mrs. Thomas believed that her husband spoke the truth, she would feel no need to connect with Anita Hill. But implicit in her actions is the belief that he lied. If she thinks so, so should we.

Outrageous. Mrs.Thomas is sly like a fox. As for her husband see the article by Lillian McEwen, a former girlfriend and one gets the sense that the judge could be a sexual predator. I hope that Ms. McEwen's book sheds more light on Judge Thomas' behavior. Anita Hill is much more credible than either Mrs. Thomas or Clarence Thomas. It's a shame that she has to suffer again at the hands of her nemesis and his wife. As for the so called liberal media, let's just say that the truth will eventually win out.

There is a new bunch of vicious right wing women who are taking dead aim on the rights of women and minorities and Mrs.Thomas is one of them. Her husband is a more quiet but equally determined fanatic who has already played a big role in undermining democracy in America.
