President Jill Stein?

Some would argue the upset of the century was the New York Giants ending the New England Patriots' undefeated season in 2008. It could've been the 4-3 defeat of the USSR in the 1980 Olympics by the US hockey team. But one upset could dwarf both of those -- Jill Stein getting elected president in 2012.

It's estimated that both President Obama and Mitt Romney will draw out anywhere between 45 and 60 million apiece in November, according to 2008 turnout numbers. But according to one USA Today poll, an estimated 90 million people who could vote this year probably won't, as they're disappointed in both candidates and major political parties. What if just two-thirds of those 90 million people turned out for a candidate with a truly bold vision, who isn't beholden to corporate donors or bought party elites? It would be a colossal upset for the establishment, and a big win for citizens.

Even though the left was upset at Obama, they didn't produce a primary candidate to pull him away from his conservative tendencies. Despite filling his cabinet full of Wall Street and U.S. Chamber of Commerce types like Tim Geithner, Eric Holder and Bill Daley, persistent violations of Pakistan's sovereignty with CIA-sponsored drone strikes, extrajudicial assassinations of US citizens abroad, and openly appealing a federal judge's decision that the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens without due process rights was unconstitutional without producing one witness or shred of evidence to argue the contrary, this president is running unopposed in his own party. Democratic Party officials urge us to cheer for whoever is wearing the blue jersey, only because the guy in the red jersey would be even worse.

We all watched with horror as the Republican Party desperately made a front-runner out of every sorry candidate they fielded, from Rick Perry to Michele Bachmann, all to watch their campaigns burn out in flames of stupidity and scandal. Even outright preposterous candidates like Herman Cain had their time in the #1 spot in the anybody-but-Mitt freak show also known as the 2012 Republican primaries. As Rachel Maddow documented, even those at the highest level in the Republican Party have an open disrespect for Mitt Romney. He's the right's John Kerry -- an out of touch mega-millionaire from Massachusetts with a penchant for flip-flopping on any issue to appease the current crop of voters to whom he happens to be speaking. And by picking noted big-spender turned deficit hawk Paul Ryan as his running mate, Mitt proved he's willing to placate the far-right instead of appeal to independent and undecided voters.

Obama's most notable accomplishments, like a health care reform law that did away with pre-existing conditions, a $90 billion investment in the green energy market and the killing of Osama bin Laden, are overshadowed by the fact that his own Department of Justice refused to press charges against any executives of the biggest Wall Street banks that played a part in the 2008 financial heist, despite ample evidence of fraud on a truly massive scale. Any promise of environmental stewardship by this administration should be taken with a grain of salt, as Obama has approved the first leg of the Keystone XL pipeline in spite of numerous environmental disasters caused by similar pipelines in very recent history. And one Republican Party spokeswoman openly admitted that Romney's economic proposals, upon which he's basing the entirety of his candidacy, is the same as George W. Bush's program, "just updated" -- more tax cuts for the rich in return for the elimination or privatization of government services. It's like DEVO's co-creator said -- choosing between Obama and Romney is like choosing between Coke and Pepsi.

Jill Stein is a candidate that the other 90 million of us can get excited about. Picture the populist candidate Barack Obama once was in 2008, minus the financial support from Wall Street banks and oil companies, and the fawning coverage from mainstream media outlets. In her Green New Deal, she's vowing to end drone strikes, tightly regulate Wall Street, halt all government-funded construction of fossil fuel-dependent projects, and end all foreign wars and occupations. She unabashedly calls for higher top tax rates like we saw in the days of FDR and Eisenhower, and the immediate closure of corporate tax loopholes that bleed out billions to overseas, tax-free bank accounts where the elite have stashed anywhere between $21 trillion and $32 trillion. As president, she would appoint Supreme Court justices who believe corporations are corporations, not people, and fight to get corporate money and influence out of the political process. She's even been recently arrested protesting Fannie Mae in Philadelphia. And unlike other Green Party candidates of the past, she's running not to speak on certain issues or get mainstream candidates to talk about doing the right thing. She's actually running to win, and has ballot access in nearly every state.

I used to say I'd hold my nose and vote for Obama because a Romney presidency would be an even bigger disaster than an Obama presidency. But I'm voting for Jill Stein, because I shouldn't have to hold my nose to vote for someone. Imagine if two-thirds of those 90 million disillusioned voters did the same thing by voting for Jill Stein and ousting tea party Republicans and corporate Democrats from the House and Senate. Isn't that worth showing up at the ballot box on November 6th? It would be the upset of the century.

Well, there is ONE MAJOR problem with President Jill Stein: she won't be able to govern without a Congress by her side and we know Democrats and Republicans would band together to break her. In the end, they'll say: "see, third parties don't have the experience and structure to govern".

In fact, that's what I was hoping to get with a Libertarian like Ron Paul. As Commander-in-Chief, he would be able to end all wars, while he wouldn't be able to dismantle the welfare state before voters could vote Democrats in the mid-terms to stop him first.

This kind of thinking gave us G W and the current conservative supreme court.

Obama has not been fighting hard enough for the things that are important for the country. He is in the right direction on many things but the wrong direction on others like financial and foreclosure reform. He might have gotten my vote if it were between him, Romney, and Johnson, especially with Romney being a corporate tool and Johnson's party being full of greedy/selfish people. If too many Libertarians get elected, we will see taxes for the wealthy go down even more than under Republicans, the most disadvantaged people in the country will be completely devastated, and everything will be at risk of become privatized and for-profit. So, it is either Obama or Stein for me. However, after reading Stein's positions on issues, I voted (past tense) for her over Obama.

Voting for Jill Stein seems to me to be a much more principle "waste of a vote" than voting for Obama.

Let's take a look at what Jill Stein presidency might look like! (Hmmmm, it's not what you think!)

Voting for Jill Stein. Obama/Romney should run on one ticket! They are both corporate-drones.

So I ask....Is Jill Stein a Zionist or one who puts the USA first? Many failed to support JFK because he was Catholic and they believed he would put the Vatican first. I ask again has Jill Stein ever spoken about Israel and whether the USA should make it the center of our foreign policy, or just treat it as another country such as Ireland or Italy and without any special treatment or handling?

I've heard her political stance and I would support it fully, that is unless she is a Zionist. I've never heard her position on Israel. Has anyone? JF Kennedy was oft touted by some as a threat to USA interests because he was Catholic and would put Papal interests first. I don't think he did. I would give her a chance just as Americans gave JFK.

The real problem in the USA is we need politicians and appointees that see Israel as just another Ireland or Italy and an ally instead of the center of USA foreign policy and world universe and a country that sucks up our treasure. Israel needs to move along and get off our back and remove AIPAC and others like it from our political system. Until that happens they are moocher and not a real ally.

Are you serious? Of all the candidates in this race, Stein is perhaps one of the most nuanced on the Israeli Political conflict. Her campaign has regularly made statements that she supports putting Israel to the same human rights standards as other countries, and she would make support towards them conditional. However, you decided to pick on her because of her last name? (And be so generous as to give her "a chance" to prove her loyalty?) Why don't you apply this standard to the numerous non-Jewish Democrats and Republicans, who pretty much all support the "special relationship." You've clearly picked the wrong person to make a fuss about...

I don't believe she is on the ballot in PA. I'm writing Jill Stein in. Don't agree with her on everything but she is the closest thing I can find.
01:27 PM on 09/25/2012
Is Jill Stein even on the ballot in all 50 states? I know Gary Johnson is on 47 and his campaign is working on the final 3. If you are going to advise people to vote third party, it would make sense for the candidate to at least be on the ballot in every state.

My vote is for Jill as well however in the end if Gary Johnson has a better chance based on ballot access as of Nov 5th I will vote for Gary. Mainly because I can as Carl says vote without holding my nose. On the issues however I feel Jill is the superior candidate and pray in the end she has as much of a chance as Gary or better.

AMEN! If you had a business would you limit your options to just 2 candidates?

As the leading independent Presidential candidate, allow me to share my perspective.

You've been conditioned to believe that an independent or third party candidate cannot possibly "win." The Parties have created that belief to preclude the introduction of legitimate competition.

Then, they paint their opposing candidate as nearly satanic to create a sense of fear. Next, they leverage that fear by telling you that you have to protect yourself by voting for the "lesser of two evils;" that to do anything else would be to "waste" your vote.

Essentially, they are telling you to surrender your vote to them because of a fear THEY created, rather than to vote your conscience for the candidate whom you truly believe offers the best solutions.

Now, ask yourself: "Which is the greater waste?"

The Parties traditionally have depended upon fostering an emotional environment rather than a rational one to control the public's voting behavior. They count on their constituents to passively "do as they're told" and for frustrated independents to ultimately “fall into line.”

Whether you vote for a Third Party candidate or for a truly independent candidate like me, please take your responsibility seriously, become informed, and vote for the candidate you believe offers the best leadership and solutions for our country. Only then will your vote not be wasted.

As Einstein said: "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil but because of those who look on and do nothing."

so, youre running too? or do you just not know how to use 'quotes"?
09:23 AM on 09/25/2012
No, he's actually running, his name's T.J. O'hara (obvious from his username). What's funny is he's talking about knowing the candidates, and that point seems to have completely skipped over your head.

Mr. Wolff:

For clarification, I am a candidate for the Office of President of the United States, but thank you for focusing on the relevant issue of quotation marks. I apologize for the opening and closing quotation marks on the entire statement. Quite frankly, I am puzzled by how they appeared as I do not remember inserting them. Apparently, my typing skills fall well short of my leadership skills.

However, I do know that punctuation (such as a question mark) always goes inside a quotation mark (just for future reference). Beyond the use of quotation marks, I also understand the proper use of capitalization, sentence construction, punctuation, and an apostrophe in the case contractions.

Thank you again for focusing on the extraneous quotation marks rather than the content.

I recently wrote a piece on voting third party and why it's a good idea... I think it's important to consider third party candidates and vote for that candidate if he/she is more in line where you stand. And if it comes down to choosing between two parties, why not the Libertarian and Green parties? No one ever said which two we had to choose between. And I think someone throws away their vote by voting for the lesser of two evils (voting for Obama because they don't like Romney or vice versa). How do you know you aren't voting for the better of two liars? Feel free to go have a read at what I wrote, too.

I will be BOYCOTTING THE 2012 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION -- It is impossible to vote for 'peace' in a system based on a war economy. Third Party is not the answer.

This year, the ELECTION DISSENTERS HAVE ORGANIZED! Visit the Official Website of the Call to Boycott the 2012 Presidential Election -- as the author states, we're already 90 million strong.

great way to accomplish nothing.

The great way to 'accomplish nothing' is through voting! I I see that you are uninformed about  Election Boycott 2012 -- "My little website fubarandgrill.org had a previous record of about 1,500 views for a single article--most had somewhere between 20 and 50 views. My article, 'You've Got to Stop Voting,' now has over 13,000 views, most of them in the last month."

To everyone who leans third-party or even just wants to see more third parties in the process, check out this press release from the Free and Equal Foundation. They're sponsoring a debate with different criteria, so three third parties have been invited. And though Obama and Romney probably won't attend, presumably they'll still hold the event if at least two third-parties show: http://freeandequal.org/blog-talk-radio/free-equal-set-to-host-presidential-debate
