A new CBS News poll out confirms every other poll we've seen on the topic -- the American people are solidly against tax cuts for the rich.

53% of respondents said there should only be tax cuts for the middle class and no tax cuts for people making over $250,000. That's the number most people in the media are using, but that's not quite accurate. Another 14% said they don't want tax cuts for anybody, including the top bracket. So, the reality is that an overwhelming 67% of the country don't want tax cuts for the rich (including 52% of Republican voters!). Only 26% said that everyone should get a tax cut, including the rich.

So, let's do the math for people who are a little slow. That's 67% to 26%. That's a crushing 41% lead. If it was an election, that margin would be so large they would think it was rigged. The group that doesn't want tax cuts for the rich is more than two and half times the group that does.

If that weren't enough, there is an internal memo being sent around to Democrats on the Hill by Anzalone Liszt Research that shows that 77% of Americans would let the Bush tax cuts for the rich expire if the extra money went toward helping small businesses and balancing the budget. 77%!!!

Now, as a politician, how stupid do you have to be on the other side of this issue?

But that's not entirely fair because the Republicans have built their entire party on being on the other side of this issue and they're doing well. Why? Because they get handsomely compensated by those same millionaires and billionaires who benefit from the tax cuts. They use the money they collect from those guys into deceiving the American people into voting for them during the elections. That sucks for the rest of us, but at least that makes sense. There is a logical reason for them to take the more unpopular side of this equation.

Democrats on the other hand just got their ass kicked by that money spent to make sure they lose. Now, they would like to do a favor for the people who just killed them in the election and in the meanwhile take a position that 67% to 77% of the American people are against. How stupid do you have to be to do that?

That is the position of the Obama administration right now as they argue for a "compromise" where they extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich for another two years. Even Pat Buchanan laughed on-air and said that's no compromise at all. That's complete victory for the GOP. Remember, in two years there will be a new president - and if it's a Republican, the tax cuts will be extended forever. Complete and utter victory for one side. Complete and utter capitulation for the other side. Pathetic.

Of course, there are two other explanations for the actions of Obama White House. The first one is that they're not dumb, they are embarrassingly weak. They know they should side with 67% of the American people, they know they shouldn't help the people who crushed them in the last election, they know they are showing no leadership by constantly cratering to the other side, but they can't help themselves. It is in Obama's nature to always compromise, no matter what the situation is. He hates to fight. He is No Drama Obama. He will do anything to avoid a confrontation, including giving the other side exactly what they want in the guise of a sage and tempered compromise.

The last possible explanation is the worst of all. He is complicit. He is among the top 2%. So is nearly everyone he knows. Everyone in his bubble is rich, fabulously rich. So, all of the people he knows thinks it's a brilliant idea to give more tax cuts to the rich, namely them. Plus, most of the Democrats also get campaign donations from the millionaires and billionaires. Though it's self-destructive in the long run because those guys will always give more to the Republicans, they can't wean themselves off of that money. So, they go along with whatever their rich funders want.

All three options are sickening. But there is no fourth option. No one in their right mind can possibly think that opposing at least 67% of the American people to help the political opposition is a good political idea.

And one last note, when President Obama agrees to this and they add another $140 billion dollars to the deficit over the next two years because of these tax cuts for the rich, who do you think the Republicans will blame for that deficit? You guessed it, the man who just gave them everything they wanted -- Barack Obama.

Come on, how stupid do you have to be? Or at least, I hope they're just stupid and not the other options.

Isn't it amazing how many people who know how the world REALLY works use this fantastic knowledge to....comment on stories on HuffPo?

A more cynical man might say this is simply where they take their BS when people in the real world finally tire of listening to them.

Not me though.

That pretty much sums it up. How does a President go against 67% of the nation to give his political opponents everything they want? He is incredibly weak and unwilling to fight. If Obama wants a chance of winning the Democratic primary (he's in too much trouble to worry about the general election), he needs to realize the wealthy/corporate backed Republicans are at war with him and will NEVER work bipartisanly on anything but the conservative agenda.

Obama doesn't care that 67% of the nation disagree with him. They are obviously too stupid to know anything and he's so smart, he knows everything. BTW, still steaming about TSA. Need to get those letters sent! Live Free or Die; Death is Not the Worst of Evil.

The elite in America have lawmakers by the short and curlies. The GOP wants to resume pursuit of the policy catastrophe that they inflicted on America with the same type of fiscal irresponsibility that has banrkupted our nation as they clean out the last few dollars from our treasury in this Bonnie & Clye maneuver. What is absent in both parties is a sincere commitment and desire to place America on stronger footing. The current leadership in America is akin to that at the fall of the Roman Empire. Even Bloomberg is insincere in his latest centrist policy statements. America must fundamentally re-invent itself and our existing political system and the tax code. The average middle class worker who actually works pays almost half his earning in federal, state, local and sales taxes, double, triple and quadruple taxed. But our greatest concern is to give the folks living in mansions a few more dollars so that when they take a leak it dribbles down on the rest of us who will be living in the street.

When are you liberals going to learn. Class warfare has been going on for well over a century and we still have the rich. The rich will always have the means, connections, and the ability to get around any regressive taxation. Look at your beloved President Obama. Who has he helped the most -- THE RICH. Our politicians are not dumb and they know which side the bread is buttered on. All this soak the rich simply gives our politicians an excuse to soak you. What you have to ask yourself is why is the middle class getting poorer and the rich richer? The answer is simple – out of control taxes. When you look at all the taxes you pay from city to federal, hidden taxes, or the higher cost of products due to taxes (think cigarettes and gasoline), greater than 50% of your income is gone. With the money you have leftover you are essentially in survival mode. This means unlike the rich you do not have money to put in that amazing investment, start that succesful business, or get that education. This is redistribution in reverse. The name-of-the-game in Washington is to tax, tax and tax until we begin to rebel because there is nothing left over to feed our children. Your beloved politician is keeping you in poverty not the rich. So if you want to help yourself you should hop on the anti-taxation bandwagon and stop the class warfare.

Taxation is not the problem it's the out of countrolled spending by our government(s). When we have a MIC that gets over 57% of our GDP there's a problem. When Finance is 63% of our GDP that's a problem. Get money out of our politics - get lobbiest our of our government. Get out of the WTO - stop NAFTA, CAFTA and the rest. Until this is done you can scream all you want about taxes (which are lower than any other industrialised country) and nothing will change. It takes taxes for a country to run - but giving millions to billions to corporations and banks makes no sense at all.

Wake up folks. Your simple choice is this. Pay your damn taxes now to pay our bills now or borrow a giant IOU from China and then give up your mortgage interest deduction, social security, and medicare to pay that big ass bill! There is nothing tangible in this monstrosity; not a bridge or road to create a job.

Unfortunately, he's dealing with Congress, not the American people. It's not entirely clear why so many of Congress are against fixing the currently unsustainable tax situation, but Congress is definitely for second guessing itself and extending the tax cuts despite our deficit. So, Congress may be stupid for thinking that you can spend, cut taxes, and shrink a deficit all at the same time, but the people are the ones who elected these fools who keep lying to us about their priorities. This ends up making the real question "Are we stupid?", and the answer may be yes.
05:43 PM on 12/08/2010
Stupid an understatement, his relentless catering to compromise means there is NO HOPE FOR CHANGE. This guy is as smart for Sarah Palin and either way he will be a one term president. Kicked out by the left who want real change or the right who would still hate him even if he made the bush tax cuts permanent - no matter what he did they would still hate him.

And if you know you are going to go down at least go down with the ship, and make it look like you really wanted change instead of caving on every single issue.

"No Drama Obama" ...i like that... says it all.

I really wish people would stop making the stupid argument that "the rich create jobs" so they deserve this tax break. They are drawing money from the same pool as the working classes, companies. Every dollar that goes to them is a dollar that could have paid a worker. This is especially true of CEO's whose ridiculous salaries are a direct attack on the wages of people who work for those companies. Taxing them makes nothing but sense. Take the extra money they are leaching off of working people's wages and put it into improving the country for everyone. My god, are people stupid? A CEO's PERSONAL tax rate does not have anything to do with creating jobs.

Taxation in general makes no sense.
Those who produce more than they consume contribute to the creation of jobs in the overall economy. Rich, poor...doesn't matter. Taxation and government intervention destroy both the means and results of productive effort. It impoverishes the "poor" more and drives the "rich" into hiding. It also destroys the incentive to create and produce.
Then again, maybe that's what you want?

Another explanation: there isn't really a Democratic Party. The Dems positions that seem to be aligned with the People. They take contributions from the People. But they capitulate without a fight. For the past two years, we they have had super majorities in both houses of Congress and a Democratic president. But they backed off at the slightest GOP resistance. The GOP and the Dems are both hand puppets controlled by the capitalists, the oligarchy. Political fights are like a Punch and Judy show. The real control is behind the curtain. The winners will always be the rich. It's a rigged game. Less than 1% of the People are millionaires. Over 50% of Congress are. They voted themselves a national health care system, just for them and paid by us, the taxpayers. The voted themselves a raise. They voted themselves a tax cut. What don't you understand?

I'm reassured to have some company in my puzzlement. Obama is either tragically dumb, easily manipulated, amazingly timid, or sly like a fox... or perhaps all of the above. This is really one of the first times that I am genuinely disappointed him as our Commander-in-Chief... oh ok, and I'm not thrilled about his continued support for a war mongering Israel. How hard is it to come down on a country who murders 10 aid workers on live international video?
04:42 PM on 12/08/2010
Only 1/50 households earn over $250k per year- that's 2%.

What does this group think about taxes? Isn't this group the smartest group? Don't they understand the most about economics? I'm interested to hear not what the people think, but what the most informed and intelligent people think, i.e. people who earn the most money.
02:17 PM on 12/10/2010
Taxation is confiscation. If that's the kind of government you want, that's the kind of government you'll get.
When they take all of your excess cash and claim you owe more, they will take your material means of production (house, car, tools, business, etc.). Only when you withdraw your spiritual means of production (you're mind) will they move on to the next victim.

Until they run out of victims...then we'll all be broke and starving.
