The Real Convention Is at Cracker Bay

Posted: 08/30/2012 9:38 am

One of the reasons this Republican convention has been so deathly dull is that the real action isn't at the convention. It's at Cracker Bay. That's the name of the yacht where the Romney team just hosted 50 partiers, including some of his top donors. This was one of about a dozen events outside of the convention where they had private meetings with donors giving more than $1 million dollars to his campaign. Over $1 million a piece. Now, where do you think the real policy gets made?

You think Mitt Romney gives a damn what a delegate thinks? The only delegates that matter were on that yacht. They call this group the "Victory Council." This is made of people who are literally millionaires and billionaires and who dictate what Mitt Romney's positions will be. He's a legendary flip-flopper, but if you want to know what he really thinks you had to be on that boat.

"It was a really nice event. These are good supporters," said billionaire Wilbur Ross, an energy industry executive, according to ABC News. I bet it was. Mitt Romney just revealed his energy plan a couple of days ago. Are you going to be surprised to find out that it massively helps energy companies? A really nice event is where you pay a million bucks and you get billions back if the candidate you supported wins the presidency.

It's clear what Mitt Romney owes these people. What do you think he owes you? Ann Romney said that Mitt was a man who would not fail. She's right; he will not fail his donors. He is a good businessman, so he will give them the service they paid for.

They're so brazen the boat they were meeting on was flying a Cayman Islands flag. As one local put it, even their yacht doesn't want to pay taxes. In the old days, you'd be a little embarrassed about things like this and it would be huge news if you got caught. Now people treat it like it's perfectly normal.

Paul Ryan recently went to get the blessing of billionaire GOP donor Sheldon Adelson. Soon after he was picked and before getting ready for their convention, he had to stop everything and kiss the ring of their boss. This is sick. It is obvious legalized bribery and it's being done right in front of our eyes. And the press hardly notices as our democracy leaves shore along with that boat full of millionaires.

The candidate with more money wins 93 percent of congressional races. In the Senate, it's 94 percent. It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, a liberal or a conservative, it doesn't matter what your ideas or values are. The only thing that matters is if you're on that yacht.

This post is part of the HuffPost Shadow Conventions 2012, a series spotlighting three issues that are not being discussed at the national GOP and Democratic conventions: The Drug War, Poverty in America, and Money in Politics.

HuffPost Live will be taking a comprehensive look at the corrupting influence of money on our politics August 29th and September 5th from 12-4 pm ET and 6-10 pm ET. Click here to check it out -- and join the conversation.

People, this is a wake up call. We must get out the vote and do not allow this aristocracy to continue. Talk to your friends and neighbors and stress the importance of Romney NOT winning! Obama ain't no bargain, but at least he is not out to destroy your standard of living, both while you working and most when you are retired.

OH wait. Where's the "expose" this year's George Clooney in Switzerland?

Oh and ...Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seinfeld actress, Obama supporter, net worth 3.5 billion. Where's the Obama list?

where on earth did you get that? According to celebritynetworth.com, her father (still alive, still heading his company Louis-Dreyfus Energy Services) and his company are worth $3 billion. Her mother, stepmother and 4 siblings are also still alive. So, your figures are off by half a billion, and your premise is off by 8 people, if you only count primary family, and not the rest of the people invested in the business as well. Accuracy... not a strong point, huh.

I find solace that there are people who still believe in the rule of law. Adelson may have purchased himself two people, but that doesn't mean they'll win.

If you are a home builder or a cement contractor or an electrician you take any money as a bribe and you go to jail. You are looked down at and treated like an outcast in society. But if you are a big time politician you can take money that any of those contractors could retire on, and nobody says a thing. Seems like america is a great country for the rich but everyone else gets to see what it is like to live in a third world economy. Except there the small timers can take bribes.

And we believe that America is set apart from other countries, so great! Wake up people stop voting out of fear, hatred, stupidity. Most americans vote aganist their on self interests. I see people using medicare issued scooters to get around supporting these guys and I ask why? Romney/Ryan is not going to have a plan for the average everyday man/woman.
They want to do away with regulations that protect people, privatize schools, medicare, social security and a host of other things. Regulations by the Government are okay if they are telling women what to do with their bodies but not okay for corporations. The Romney/.Ryan team will say and do anything to get in office, they are controlled by a few. Most of america is not included in this few. This article is right on target.

Romney loves America. So does his money, when it takes a boat ride to come and visit him.

The corruption will end when the lobbyists are banned , all donations are made illegal and earmarks are strictly prohibited. Until that improbable time, it will continue to be more show than go.

And long as I'm wishing, take away the ability of any elected official to set their own rate of pay.

Crooked money is legalized just as Wall Street behavior was, and loop holes to avoid taxes.

I agree with lobbyists being banned. If lawmakers need lobbyists to write their bills, why did they run and become a lawmaker? All donations should also be banned other than a standard amount from the government for their campaign. My only issue, and it's a small one, earmarks are one of the only ways the Representative or Senator can work for their constituents which is one of their duties. It should be balanced against the need of the country. Currently, no thought is given to the needs of the country and hence the explosion of the earmark. This is one of the major reasons why the DoD budget is so hard to cut. You cut and other items are added as earmarks. Perhaps, the earmark can be limited to a fixed dollar value per Senator/Representative and then their constituents can determine if it is being spent wisely. I would even allow them to save from one year to another but no borrowing from the future. If someone is not reelected then the balance is transferred to the successor. In other words, it should be reformed but not completely removed.

Your last is already in place. Congress cannot pass a pay raise for themselves but can for the next Congress, when, theoretically, they can lose and so not be the recipient. It's Amendment 27 to the US Constitution. This is imperfect as some Senators will not have an intervening election but it is completely true for Representatives.

It sure would have been nice to have gotten a picture of Mitt Romney on that boat with the Cayman Islands flag behind him.
